This pair of SIMOND crampons was made using chromium and molybdenum grade steel parts for their durability.
These instructions describe how to adjust and fasten the crampons to a pair of boots. For your safety, read these
instructions and keep them in a safe place. Thank you for placing your trust in our products.
1- USE
Simond crampons are Personal Protective Equipment which helps prevent falls by slipping as covered by Regulation
(EU) 2016/425. The SIMOND crampons are designed for a certain type of terrain:
MONOCEROS – Icefall and dry-tooling
VAMPIRE – Icefall and great north faces
MAKALU - Technical mountaineering
CAÏMAN - Glacier hiking and classic mountaineering
For maximum safety, the crampons should be used with the anti-balling plates to prevent snow from building up
under the base of the crampons. Please note: some types of snow can build up beneath crampons despite using
anti-balling plates. In this (rare) case, make sure you regularly remove the snow, e.g. with an ice axe. Carry the
crampons in a protective bag. Be careful not to hurt yourself or anyone else when the crampons are fastened to a
backpack.
2 - PLEASE NOTE: TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL
Only those who are trained in mountaineering techniques or under direct and continuous visual supervision by
someone trained in mountaineering techniques are authorised to use this equipment. It is your responsibility to
get this training. If you have not had training in mountaineering techniques, do not use this equipment. A lack of
knowledge and/or poor application of these techniques may result in serious injuries or even death.
3 - ADJUSTING THE CRAMPONS
The Simond crampons are asymmetric. Make sure that each crampon is on the
correct foot, i.e. not inverted. To do this, use the markings on the crampons.
The buckles used to close the straps should be on the outside of the foot. (A)
Adjust the size using the rapido system. Lift the shiny coloured metal lever. (B)
There should no play.
Inspection before use: Test the crampon in a safe place. The crampon should stay firmly in place on the boot
whatever your stance.
IMPORTANT:
Before using the crampons, check that the selected fastening system is compatible with the boots being used. Only
use crampons with flexible linking bars with flexible crampon-rated boots.
EN - US - USER INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CRAMPONS
When the crampon length is properly adjusted, the crampons
should hang on the boot without the bindings being engaged.
The linking bar should not protrude by more than 10 mm behind
the heel. (I)
Size ranges: The Makalu and Vampire models have two size
ranges. You can switch between them by engaging the cram-
pon's linking bar in the reduction fitting (F2). For the Caïman and
Monoceros models, use the screws provided to shorten it (F1).
Check that the crampon is securely fastened under the boot.
AUTOMATIC SYSTEM (G1):
For boots with toe and heel extensions
1- Engage boot's toe extension under the front bail.
2- Place the heel of the boot in the crampon's heel binding (the limit stops
must be touching the sole) Check that the screw wheel is upwards (see illus-
tration E). Adjust using the micrometric screw (E) and engage the heel piece.
3- Then close and tighten the strap. (H)
SEMI-AUTOMATIC SYSTEM (G2):
For boots with a heel extension
1- Place the front of the boot under the flexible front attachment.
2- Place the heel of the boot in the crampon's heel binding (the limit stops
must be touching the sole) Adjust using the micrometric screw (C) and en-
gage the heel clip.
3- Pass the strap through the flexible front attachment.
4- Close and tighten the strap. (H)
STRAP SYSTEM (G3):
For boots without extensions
1- Place the front of the boot under the flexible front attachment.
2- Place the heel of the boot in the heel binding of the crampon. The crampon must be adjusted so that it hangs on
the boot by itself. (I)
3- First, thread the strap through the metal ring of the front bail, then through the metal ring of the rear bail. Finally
thread it through the double ring. Tighten the strap. (H-K)
FITTING THE POINTS (J) (for the Vampire and Monoceros models)
J1: Fitting Vampire point(s):
1: Insert the first screw/spacer(s) system in the rear hole of the point(s). Then add the nut.
2: Slide the screw/spacer system in the rear notch of the point fastening system.
3: Insert the second screw/spacing/nut system
4 : Tighten the screws
