28108 card. Section 4, 28108 LCS Commands, is an extension of Section 2, 28000 LCS System Commands, of the 28000-LCS Programming Instructions manual. It describes the operation of specific 28108 card functions and commands using the LCS command set.

28108 General Information Page 3 Other features of the 28108 include a test input for injection of calibration signals into the channel input and a monitor output that allows for convenient monitoring of any channel out- put via a single BNC on the 28000 chassis.
1.2.2 Input Stage The 28108 input stage has 100 dB of common-mode rejection, low DC drift, and low noise. A programmable switch at the input stage is provided to connect the amplifier to the 28000 system test bus. The test bus is used to inject signals for performance verification. In addi- tion, the excitation supply may be connected to the input stage for direct verification of the excitation supply level.

Front Panel Outputs (Option 4): DC-coupled single-ended output available at the front panel of the 28108 card, allowing the 28108 card to be used in the 28016-M3 or 28008-M3 chassis. Note: For applications where multiple independent buffered outputs are required, Option 4 should not be used.

28108 outputs. 28016-M3 or 28008-M3: The 28108 card must be configured with Option 4 when used in the 28016-M3 or the 28008-M3 chassis. The eight 28108 outputs are available on 26-pin D connectors that are integral to the 28108 card front panel (Option 4).
Input Mating Connectors The input connectors are integral to 28108 cards. Cutouts on the 28000 frames allow the input connector to pass through the rear I/O panel and to mate directly with the input cables. Two 26-pin high-density D connectors are utilized for the eight inputs (four inputs per connector).
28016-M3 and 28008-M3 Chassis The eight channel outputs are available on a 26-pin D connector on the 28108 card front panel (Option 4). Note: The 28108 card must be configured with Option 4 when used in the 28016-M3 or 28008-M3 chassis.

Page 17 28108 Setup and Installation Introduction This section contains instructions for preparing and installing the 28108 card for use with Precision Filters System 28000 frames. Before installing cards in your system, read Section 2, Site Preparation and Installation of the System 28000 Operation and Maintenance Instructions manual to become familiar with the procedure.
If the shipping container has been damaged in any way, have the carrier’s agent present when the equipment is unpacked. If the equipment is damaged, file a claim with the carrier and forward a copy to Precision Filters. Precision Filters will notify you of the disposition of the equipment and will arrange for repair or replacement without waiting for a settlement of the claim against the carrier.
2.3.3 Shipment Requirements Always use the original packaging materials to ship system components. A new container can be purchased from Precision Filters. Failure to do so may damage sensitive components. 28108 cards can be installed in any card slot: J0 through J15 in a 16-card mainframe and J0 through J7 in an 8-card mainframe (if the correct cable or cable adapter is attached to the rear panel).

For full-bridge measurements using a 4-wire configuration, the 28108 connections should be made as shown in Figure 4. Note: To set up the 28108 for 4-wire full bridge measurements, you must set the excitation sense to INSTRUMENT in the GUI or LCS.
Figure 5 shows the 6-wire configuration that utilizes the + and – SENSE leads. Note: To set up the 28108 for 6-wire full-bridge measurements, you must set the excitation sense to GAGE in the GUI or LCS.
Page 24 Other Bridge Input Configurations Using External Completion Resistors The 28108 does not provide bridge completion; however, the user may wish to provide exter- nal completion resistors for quarter- and half-bridge configurations. To minimize interfering noise sources, it is recommended that the completion resistors be located as close as possible to the active gage to keep the circuit physically balanced.

The 28108 GUI has an indicator to show when a channel’s excitation supply is in current limit or has reached an internal overtemperature condition. 3.2.4 Excitation The 28108 features a fully programmable (per channel) constant voltage excitation supply that can source from 0 to 20 volts to the bridge. Figure 31 illustrates the controls used to set and monitor performance of the excitation supply.
Thermal Shutdown indicator is lit. 3.2.5 Input Coupling The 28108 provides DC input coupling. The CPL control is set to DC coupling for all chan- nels. Modification M101 on the 28108 card provides fixed DC input coupling. Option 6 AC/DC Input Coupling Option 6 AC/DC Input Coupling allows the user to select the balanced differential input coupling, either AC coupled or DC coupled.
3.2.6 Filter Type Use the FTYPE control field on 28108-LP4FP cards to select either flat mode (LP4F) or pulse mode (LP4P) operation of the low-pass filter. See Figure 32. Flat mode provides pass-band characteristics nearly identical to a Butterworth filter while providing a much sharper roll-off.
3.2.9 Test Mode Use the Test Mode control field to select the test mode of the channel. Figure 33 illustrates the Test Mode control. Note: FAT protocols for the excitation test require the use of the 28108-TEST-ADAPTER. (See the following section.) The FAT routine for this test provides user prompts to install the adapters.
The 28108-TEST-ADAPTER test adapter (PF pn A10953G2), shown in Figure 43, supports FAT testing of the excitation supply on the 28108 card. Two adapters per card are required to perform the excite FAT. These test adapters replace the normal input cables on the two input connectors of the 28108 card during excite FAT testing.
