Alternator Operation and Diagnosis General Description The 460/230 Vac alternator consists of three principal components: the main alternator, the integral direct-connected exciter, and an externally mounted excitation control system. The main alternator may be subdivided into the 4-pole rotating main field and the alternator stator (ALT). The rotating main field, the rotating rectifier and the exciter armature are all mounted on a common shaft.
