Installation and Operations Manual v1.6 PREFACE This users' manual applies to all AVAB Digital Dimmer II dimmer packs. The Digital Dimmer II is also referred to as the DDII , pronounced "dee-dee-too". The AVAB DDII is a system based on a microcomputer; as such, it may be programmed to do many different things.
Digital Dimmer II Installation and Operations Manual v1.6 SPECIFICATIONS GENERAL: The DDII is available in 6, 12 or 24 channel units, with power ratings of 1200, 1800, 2400, 4200, or 6000 watts per channel. Dimming is via phase control using an entirely digital triggering system.

Digital Dimmer II Installation and Operations Manual v1.6 LOAD: 10 watt to 1200, 1800, 2400, 4000 or 6000 watts, incandescent, inductive, or fluorescent with dimming type ballast. DIMMING CURVE: Software dependent, user selectable. FILTERING: Powdered iron core torodial chokes. 500 µ sec. rise time is standard. 800 µ sec.
422/RS-232 compatible, and offer twisted-pair transmission over distances up to 3000 feet. The main serial link receives data in either AVAB's AVAB-240 protocol or USITT's DMX- 512 protocol. Selection of protocol is currently set at the factory and is not user selectable.
System Configuration Switches- Located on the dimmer PC card, these "DIP" switches are used in initial system setup. The user should have few occasions to change them. Refer to the appropriate AVAB Software documentation for details. Pack Switch- These two rotary switches select the "pack number" in a digital multiplex system.
Digital Dimmer II Installation and Operations Manual v1.6 power wiring entry, should ALWAYS REMAIN OFF. If is on, it indicates that there is voltage between ground and neutral - a condition that must NEVER exist. This could be the result of reversing a hot leg and neutral, or a hot leg and ground.
To facilitate rack or road case mounting, a set of rack "ears" is available from AVAB. The holes in the ears match the standard hole centers in a 19" EIA equipment rack or case. It should be noted that the rack ears alone are not sufficient to support the weight of the dimmer.

Digital Dimmer II Installation and Operations Manual v1.6 Load circuit conductors shall be sized in accordance with applicable codes for the above current ratings, as required. Note that stage lighting loads are by nature unbalanced. Therefore, neutral conductors must not be shared.
To those users who have the knowledge and equipment to troubleshoot and repair digital electronics equipment may purchase the Digital Dimmer II service manual, which provides the information necessary for successful troubleshooting at the component level.

"hot" on a digital voltmeter. Because of this, verify dimmer output with a known good test fixture. Refer to the appropriate AVAB Software documentation for information on Italic keywords. In order to facilitate the troubleshooting process, symptoms have been divided into three categories: 1) problems that affect all channels, 2) problems that effect groups of channels, and 3) problems that affect individual channels.
