    Page 1 INTRODUCTION The instructions in this document are intended only for authorized service personnel. AM-6060 computers contain a high-output power supply, which produces current levels high enough to make it unsafe for unauthorized persons to perform work inside the chassis.

    The next few sections contain configuration information for the AM-301-10 and AM-176 boards AM-301-10 Board Configuration The AM-301-10 board supports the four serial ports in the AM-6060. It also contains your computer's SSD chip, real-time clock, and other I/O related circuitry.

    The AM-301-10 board has an option to enable the computer's remote hardware reset, using a special cable from Alpha Microsystems, part number DWB-10323-00. To enable remote reset: 1. Connect one end of the cable to JP4 (to the pin nearer J1) on the AM-301-10 board.

    SSD and PROM Chip Removal The type of socket used for the boot PROM and SSD chips in your AM-6060 requires a special tool for chip removal. If you ever need to remove and replace either of these chips, be sure to use the correct tool, as shown in Figure 7.

    Figure 7: SSD Chip Removal Tools AM-966-10 CONNECTIONS The AM-6060 uses the AM-966-10 front panel display board, which connects to the AM-301-10. In most cases, you should not need to connect any wires to or disconnect any wires from the AM-966. However, if any of your front panel display lights stop working, or if one or more wires come loose from the AM- 966, you can refer to the picture and list below to check and, if necessary, remake any connections.

    SIMMs, first remove the existing SIMMs, then install new ones, following the procedures below. If you change the amount of memory in your AM-6060, you must also reset the JP4 jumpers (memory size select) according to the settings later in this chapter.

    SIMMs. Installing Memory SIMMs The AM-6060 supports a minimum of 8MB and a maximum of 512MB of main memory. Memory is implemented as paired SIMM modules (of equal capacity) of 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, or 128MB each. Use 60ns SIMMs only; 70ns SIMMs will not work. Always install the SIMMs of largest capacity first. 3. Always install the first pair of SIMM modules at Bank0. Use Bank1 for a second pair of SIMM modules.

One of the 3.5” bays and all of the 5.25” bays are accessible through the computer’s front panel after you remove the appropriate filler panels.

Notice how the panel is positioned over the two alignment tabs on the bottom of the chassis. When you reinstall the panel, you must make sure it is properly positioned over both tabs; if not, you won’t be able to reinstall the two screws.
