water, which is to decrease the
aci
dity
and
thus

corros

nature, The presence
of
large
amounts
of
free carbon
dioxide gas in solution
(carbonic acid) renders a water acid
in
character, which can
cause
corrosion
damage
to
the
metal
components of
a
water system,
including
the water
pump,
piping (iron
,
galvanized
brass
and even
co
pper),
tank
,
water
heater
and
fixtures (usuall
y
a
g
reen
stain). The
neutrali
z
ing
filt er
contains
a
bed of
material such
as calcite.
As
water
passes through this bed
,
the
carbonic
ac
id
is
neutralized
and
a small amount
ofth
bed
is disso
lved
.
As
a
resul
t.
t
he
water
becomes
m
ore alkaline (higher pH
value)
and thus
less corrosive. A neutralizer requires
occasional
backwashi
ng to loosen
the
material
and
clean the
bed. From
time
and time, add itional calcite must
be
added
to
the bed to
re
p
lace that which is dissolved
.
A convenient
dome

has been placed on top of the
minera
l
tank

eas

re
placing the calcite each
year. Depending
on
the
net
effect
of
adding
hardness t
hrough calcite,
a softener may become
necessary after the
neutra
li
zi

filter.
