13. HOW TO USE: Find a clean, light-coloured wall or a sheet of white paper. Aim the projector at the wall or paper and
turn it on. The projector must be 60 cm or more from the wall or paper. The greater the distance, the bigger the projected
image will be. Now choose a set of slides to make a face and put them into the projector slot one by one. Focus the
projected image by turning the focus head on the projector. How does your face look?
14. Change the combination of facial features to change the appearance of the "suspect". There are lots and lots of
combinations to try. Can you make a face that looks like you or someone you know? Here are a few examples.
E. HOW IT WORKS
The battery powers a bright LED bulb inside the projector. Rays of light from the bulb go through the films. Then the rays
pass through a lens. The lens bends the rays so that all the rays from one point on a the films meet (focus) on the wall.
Light rays from the top of the films meets at the bottom of the image, and vice-versa, so the image is upside down
compared to the films. The film is a few centimetres from the lens. The lens bends light rays from each point on the film so
they meet much further away. This makes the image on the wall much bigger than the image on the film.
F. TROUBLE SHOOTING
• If the projector light does not come on: check that you have inserted the batteries correctly.
• If the projector light is dim: check that your batteries are fresh.
• If the image is blurred: check that the projector is more than 60 cm from the wall and that you have focussed it properly.
G. FUN FACTS
• Piecing together facial features like this is a traditonal way for a detective to build an image of a suspect in a crime case.
• An image made by putting together different facial features to match a witness's description of a face called Photo FIT. FIT
is short for Facial Identification Technique.
• Today, detectives use computer images of facial features to build a picture of a face. This is called E-FIT (shortname for
Electronic Facial Identification Technique)
• Police forces use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to automatically match E-FIT images to photographs of previous criminals they
have stored on computers.
• Experts can recreate the faces of people who died long ago by building up layers of clay on the outside of skulls.
