Connevans Loop Field Strength Meter
The FSM2 Loop Field Strength Meter from Connevans
is a digital meter and audio monitor for testing Audio
Frequency Induction Loop Systems (AFILS).
This meter is designed for both professional and
non-professional users and provides a quick and
accurate method of monitoring and setting the
performance of loop systems.
A suite of free audio test signals is available for free download from
www.connevans.info/page/loop_field_meter. These may be used on any
convenient device such as tablets, mobile phones, music players and laptops.
Before you start
There are a few initial settings to consider before you begin taking measurements
with the Connevans Loop Field Strength Meter. The FSM2 covers a wide dynamic
range of magnetic field strength from -44 to 8dB re 400mA/m in two ranges along
with A weighted and flat frequency responses, true RMS and PPM (Peak Programme
Meter) display time responses.
1.
Firstly, decide whether you prefer to use the PPM (Peak Program Meter)
or RMS mode of display
2.
Secondly, whether you wish to use the PH (Peak Hold) function.
RMS mode is specified in EN IEC 60118-4. However, PPM mode is widely considered to
be advantageous for moving signals such as speech and music etc. and is
recommended over RMS mode in EN IEC 60118-4, EN 62489-1, IEC TR 63079, all
previous publications of BS7594 and is used for all broadcast monitoring.
Note : for continuous sinewave signals, both modes give the same display readings.
The PH function maintains the highest instantaneous
reading on the display for 3 seconds before decaying
slowly. (The peak hold value may be cancelled by a
short touch of the power button).
Select the preferred operating modes using the slide
switches in the battery compartment.
The factory settings are RMS mode with Peak Hold off.

NOTE: When replacing batteries, preferrably remove the batteries whilst the FSM2 is switched ON. If the FSM2 is OFF, wait 15 seconds after removing the old batteries before fitting the new ones. When the unit is on standby, residual charge in the internal circuit will keep the unit alive for 10-15 seconds.
  • Page 3 EQ settings. The adjacent rotary control adjusts the output volume. Auto Power OFF: The FSM2 automatically goes to sleep after 40 minutes if no buttons are touched or no magnetic field strength is detected above the lowest LED.
  • Page 4 Switch off any audio induction loop equipment (but switch on any other mains operated equipment in the test area that would normally be in use) Switch the FSM2 ON and touch the RANGE button to select low range Hold the meter upright with the top at the position a hearing aid is likely to be used.
  • Page 5 Adjust any gain or compression controls so that the induction loop compression indicator is not on. With the FSM2 on the HIGH range and FLAT frequency response settings, adjust the line volume control so that the signal peaks up to 0dB on the bargraph. If 0dB is not achievable without the loop amplifier compression light illuminating, place the FSM2 nearer to the loop cable.
  • Page 6 FSM2 (FLAT light off). The appropriate microphone control is adjusted to achieve a peak of 0dB on the FSM2 bargraph if using RMS mode or +3dB if using PPM mode. In practice, a peak signal between -3dB and +3dB is usually satisfactory. It is normal and recommended to have some degree of compression on microphone signals.
