and the electrode holder

Clip the earth clamp onto the work piece, choosing
an area of clean, bright metal close to the proposed weld
to ensure a good electrical connection.
Now, insert a welding

rod into the notch in
the electrode holder' s
jaws. Squeeze the lever to
open
them;

to close.
Move
the
current
selector lever to give
the required welding
current, reading this off the gauge next to the lever.
Push the selector knob IN.
Turn ON the fuel tap and set the choke – fully closed
if starting from cold, half closed if the engine is warmed up.
Place your foot on the cross bar foot rest, then give
the starter cord a couple of brisk pulls and the
engine should fire. Once it' s running, open the choke
and let the engine warm up for a few minutes before
commencing work.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
Before striking an arc, ensure your vision is
protected by the welding mask lens.
Holding the welding rod at about 3mm (1/8in),
simply move the rod slowly along the weld in a
series of semi-sweeps, across the line of the joint.
Chip off the any slag build up on the weld before
making a second pass.
Recommended equipment settings are no more
than guides. In practice, changing them slightly may
give better results. For example, you might need a
slightly different welding current. So, always check the
setting by making a test weld.
EQUIPMENT CARE
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not do what you want with reasonable
ease, assume you have the wrong tool for the job. Ask at
your local HSS Hire Shop for advice.
earth
Keep the equipment clean. You will find less of a
chore if you clean up regularly rather than wait until the
end of the hire.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves.
Keep the engine upright at all times. If it should tip
over, mop up any fuel spillage' s and contact your nearest
HSS Hire Shop for advice before restarting.
Regularly check the fuel level and refuel as
required with 2–stroke mix (1 part 2–stroke oil to 25
parts petrol ) pre-mixed in a suitable container.
Replace the welding rod before it becomes too
short – remember to let it cool, first.
FINISHING OFF
If you are stopping only for a short break, press
and hold the stop button until the engine dies and
turn the fuel tap OFF . Leave everything to cool.
If you are finishing for the day, turn the fuel OFF
and wait for the engine to stop on its own.
Remove the earth clamp from the work and take
the rod out of the electrode holder.
Disconnect the electrode holder and earth clamp
leads from their terminals, and coil them neatly,
ready for return to your local HSS Hire Shop.
