REMOVING FACTORY REAR BUMPER Because there are so many variations between JL factory rear bumpers, between steel and aluminum, and between trim levels, and they seem to change every year, we can’t give you a step-by-step removal tutorial. Your goal is to remove your OEM rear bumper from your Jeep. Usually it’s a total of 4 or 6 bolts, possibly some end cap removal as well. Be sure to unplug your sensor / power harness from the driver side before removing bumper from Jeep. REMOVING FACTORY REAR BUMPER ELECTRONICS If equipped, we’ll be removing your backup sensors. Odds are the harness for them is buried under brackets requiring snipping factory zip ties. Before you remove them from your bumper, take a sharpie and mark on them which way is UP and label them from driver side to passenger side which is 1, 2, 3, and 4. You’ll also remove your license plate light using a 10mm wrench. Retain the factory nuts, they’ll be reused. Remove backup sensors (if equipped) by prying open their retainers, then press clip towards wiring and remove sensor plug. You DO NOT have to unplug the sensor from its harness. If equipped with rubber o-rings or sensor covers, keep those installed. Remove factory trailer electrical harness (if equipped) plug assembly from OEM bumper. If installed on rear crossmember, unplug the harness from back of port and uninstall port from crossmember. If you do not have the factory tow harness installed, you’ll install the delete plate in rear bumper with supplied hardware. 8. Install 2x plastic license plate nuts into license plate recess. SENSOR INSTALLATION Orientation is key. Set harness next to bumper and align sensors across with 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order from driver to passenger side. The new “bung” retainer supplied in your kit will align with the UP arrow you marked on each sensor. Once you have each bung aligned, insert it into the bumper from the outside in. It may take a rubber mallet to fully seat each bung. 10. There are thick and thin clips in your sensor bag. Rock Hard 4x4 bumpers use the thin clips. Clip each sensor bung into the bumper with 1 clip per bung. They’ll snap into place. Once you have the bung fully installed, insert each sensor fully into each bung, triple checking up is up. They’ll snap into place. Should hear audible clicks on top and bottom of sensor. Route sensor harness through cutouts inside rear bumper to prevent them from being pinched by frame.
