Depth-of'field is the range between the nearest and farthest distances
which are in focus at a given lens aperture.
The minimum aperture (for example f/22) gives you the greatest
depth-of-field, or area in focus. The maximum aperture (for example
f/1.4) gives you the smallest depth-of-field. When you vary aperture
value, the range "in focus" changes accordingly, so that you can create
different photographic effects in your pictures. As illustrated in the
pictures on the right (examples of f/1.4 and f/22), the distance range
in focus can be confirmed by the depth-of-field scale on the lens.
