SER-2020 V2.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION 3.1 LFO AND BENDPAD SECTION 3.1.1 CONTROLS LFO 1 RATE: The LFO 1 offers a frequency range typically from 0.05Hz to 20Hz. The LFOs can be reset on every 'note on' by using the TRIG switch, ensuring that modulation always starts at the same point.
Page 11
SER-2020 V2.1 A440: Switches the noise source between white noise or a clean 440Hz tone for tuning purpose. The audio level of this signal can be adjusted using the noise control knob on the audio mixer. TOUCH ‘N BEND: The bend pad is used for controlling the VCO, VCF, or VCA through the bend assign controls (refer to section 3.2).
SER-2020 V2.1 3.1.2 INPUT AND OUTPUTS INPUTS CV IN : The external CV input can be routed to either the internal pitch CV or Bend Pad CV, and this can be configured using the MIDI CC message (CC#112), as detailed in Table 1. The Pitch CV is quantized to 1 semi-tone.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.2 CONTROL & MODULATION 3.2.1 CONTROLS MASTER TUNE: FINE: Tune control for both VCOs, with fine-tuning over a range of +/-8 semi-tones. OCTAVES: Transpose switch for both VCOs, allowing selection between -1/0/+1/+2. When both 'OCTAVES' and 'OCTAVE' switches are set to '0', VCO 1 and VCO 2 are in their zero positions, and the A4 key on the keyboard can be tuned to 440 Hz.
SER-2020 V2.1 FREQUENCY MODULATION (FM): LFO 2 TRIANGLE: Modulation level for both VCOs. The triangle wave can modulate a maximum of 6 semi-tones. LFO PULSE: Modulation level for both VCOs. The square/pulse wave can modulate a maximum of 2 octaves. When the external Frequency Modulation input is used, this knob sets the amount of external modulation.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.3 VCO SECTION 3.3.1 VCO CONTROLS VCO1 Total frequency range of VCO 1 is from 10Hz to 20KHz. SYNC: Control for VCO synchronization. VCO 2 can be synchronized to VCO 1 in three modes: SOFT, HARD-Pulse, and HARD-Sawtooth. In both hard modes, only one VCO is detuned by the Pad or MIDI command for special coloration effects.
SER-2020 V2.1 VCO2 INTERVAL: Control for the interval of VCO 2, a fifth up or down. When the control indicates zero, along with the OCTAVE selector, both VCO 1 and 2 are in unison. OCTAVE: The octave transpose switch; -1/0/+1/+2 octave.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.4 MIXER AND ROUTING SECTION 3.4.1 MIXER CONTROLS MIXER: VCO 1: Audio level of VCO 1. VCO 2:Audio level of VCO 2. SUB 1: Audio level of the sub-oscillator, this generates a frequency one octave below the pitch of VCO1.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.5 VCF SECTION 3.5.1 VCF CONTROLS FREQUENCY: PEAK 1 / PEAK 2: Frequency control for peak filter 1 and for peak filter 2. LPF: Frequency control for the low-pass filter. RESONANCE: PK 1 / PK 2: Resonance control for peak filter 1 and for peak filter 2. The band width for peak 1 and 2 for minimal resonance is greater than 3 octaves, and for maximum resonance less than 1 semi-tone.
Page 19
SER-2020 V2.1 LFO 2 / EXT. MOD: Modulation control for both peak filters by LFO 2. This means that both peak frequencies will always move in the same direction according to the interval set by the Frequency control of the peak filter. The maximum LFO control range for PEAK 1 and 2 is 8 octaves up. When the external modulation input is used, this knob controls the level of external modulation.
SER-2020 V2.1 KBD TRK LPF: Control for keyboard tracking. Keyboard tracking can be adjusted between zero (no tracking) and 2. In this case, for every octave on the keyboard, the filter is shifted over two octaves. A common setting is 1, meaning the filter frequency will track the VCO frequencies. This is also convenient when resonant peaks need to track fundamentals.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.6 ADSR SECTION 3.6.1 ADSR CONTROLS The filter and VCA sections have independent ADSR generators, each featuring slightly different control parameters for the best feel when trimming filter and loudness contours. ADSR 1 AND 2: ATTACK: Control for attack times of both ADSRs, ranging from 1 millisecond to 10 seconds.
SER-2020 V2.1 OUTPUTS ADSR 1 OUT POSITIVE : Positive ADSR 1 envelope output. Output level range from 0 to 8 Volt. ADSR 1 OUT NEGATIVE : Negative ADSR 1 envelope output. Output level range from 0 to -8 Volt. ADSR 2 OUT POSITIVE : Positive ADSR 2 envelope output.
V2.1 3.8 SPEECH MODE For easy control of filter formants, the SER-2020 is equipped with pre-programmed human voice formants. These formants can be assigned to a key on the MIDI keyboard. In this mode, the two peak filters are utilized, and the low-pass filter can be freely adjusted for other controls. Note: Always remember to align the peak filters before using the speech mode.
HEADPHONE jack and can be connected to most common headphones. MIDI The SER-2020 features a MIDI input and a MIDI out/thru. The MIDI input allows for MIDI control of the SER-2020. Establish the connection by employing a standard MIDI cable to link the MIDI out port of your MIDI controller to the MIDI in port on the SER-2020.
V2.1 3.11 VCO AUTO TUNE The VCOs of the SER-2020 are initially calibrated for linearity at the factory. However, over time, this tuning may experience degradation. You can conveniently recalibrate the linearity of the VCOs using the auto-tune function. Ensure that the synthesizer has completed its warm-up period before initiating the auto-tune function.
3.12 MIDI CONTROL 3.12.1 MME (MPE) The SER-2020 is designed to be compatible with MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) controllers. The synthesizer is essentially monophonic but can be controlled by an MPE device. The synthesizer plays monophonic notes, resulting in MIDI Monophonic Expression (MME). The module is sensitive to strike, press, glide, slide, and lift.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.13 ARP / SEQUENCER The SER-2020 Synthesizer is equipped with a basic ARP/Sequencer accessible via MIDI. 3.13.1 MODE The ARP / Sequence has three different operation modes. CC#79 : 0-31 = OFF. 32-47 = NORMAL ARP MODE. 48-63 = HOLD ARP MODE.
SER-2020 V2.1 3.13.4 GATE LENGTH The gate length determines the duration for which a note is sustained. Its value can typically be set within a range of 0 to 127, approximately corresponding to 10% to 100%. For instance, setting the gate length to 64 would imply that the note is held open for half of its total duration, or 50%, before it's released.
V2.1 3.13.8 MIDI CONFIGURATION The SER-2020 is a MIDI device with a standard configuration from the factory, featuring MIDI channel 1 as the default setting. If desired, the MIDI channel can be programmed within the range of channels 1 to 16.
