CHECK
BAll
Fig.

SPRING
71678C
The retainer is shown in
Fig. 38.
The other check
ball
should then
be
placed into
the
plunger and
tap-
ped
lightly into place in the
seat.
The retaining pin
should
then
be
driven
into
place.
Be sure
to
clean up
any burr on the plunger
which
might be left by
driving
the retaining pin in
place.
The burrs can be
removed
by using a fine
file.
The plunger should then be in-
serted
into the cylinder.
Next,
fill the base of the engine with about 1 pint of
oil.
With o screwdriver, pumpthe
plunger
up and down
to draw oil into the
trough.
See
Fig.
39.
If
no oil is
discharged
into the trough, the body and plunger are
worn,
and should
be
replaced.
ln
reassembly,
a new engine base gasket should be
used. In
lowering the crankcase over the engine base,
extreme
care should be taken that the oil pump push
rod contacts the oil pump
plunger.
To facilitate lining
up
the oil pump push rod and
the
oil pump plunger,
the
hand may be inserted through the connecting rod
tnspection plate
opening
and the
oil
pump plunger
held
down in the bore until it is contacted by the
push
rod.
The 2 screws and lockwashers at the take-
off
end
of
the engine base can then
be
replaced.
Ttghten engine base mounting screws for the Models
ADII, AE, AEH and AEHS, 28 to 32 foot pounds

and for Models AFH,
AGH
and AHH, 62 to

tool
pounds torque.
GOVERNOR
ADJUSTMENT
The
governor unit consists
of
the governor gear with
lugs carrying the governor
weights,
and mounted on a
sleeve
in which the thrust plunger operates. The
sleeve
rotates on a stationary pin carried inside of
the crankcase on
the
end wall di rectly under the cam-
shaft
gear, which drives the
governor.
The thrust
plunger operates
against a lever mounted on the inner
end
of
a rockershaft extending
through
the side wall
of
the
crankcase.
On the
outer
end of
this rockershaft
another lever
is mounted, and this 'lever
connects
through a
link with the carburetor
throttle
lever. The
governor
spring is also
connected to
this outside
lever.

To facilitate
the
removal
of the
governor assembly,
the
inner
governor
lever
should
first
be
removed,
The
inner governor lever is attached to a
square
on the
shaft with a hexagon
nut.
This hexagon nut should
be removed
and
the
inner lever
can then be
pried
off
of the
shaft. The
outer
lever
with the shaft
assem-
bled rray
then
be
pulled
out of the
crankcase.
The
governor, together
with
the governor
gear,
is held in
place in the c rankcase by the governor
gear
stop pin.
This pin should be
removed
by removing the two cot-
ter pins which hold
it
in the case. The entire gov-
ernor assembly
including
gear, can
then
be pulled off
the goverhor
shaft.
See
Fig.
37.
In reassembly,
the
bushing
in
the governor assembly is fitted to the
gov-
ernor shaft with
a
clearance of .0005 to .0025 inch.
CORRECT
ENGINE SPEED
On this engine th ree different springs are
required
to
give
the full
ran
ge of speeds and the spring must be
hooked into
the
proper hole on the governor lever.
