In general, when a lens is focused on any given subject, not only
the subject itself, but a certain area in front of and behind the
subject will also be in focus. That area is called "depth of field"
{see p. 21).
The depth-of-field becomes deeper as the lens aperture is
closed, and becomes shallower as the aperture is opened.
This characteristics can be used for photos in which both subject
and background are in focus, or one can focus attention on the
main subject and blur the background. Select the aperture value in
accordance with the needs of your photographic composition.
When using the aperture-priority mode, the lens aperture is set
manually; the camera measures the light on the subject and
automatically sets the correct shutter speed.
• The viewfinder display will show the shutter speed automatically set by
the camera in response to the user-selected aperture.
