G. REPLACING CERAMIC. CHIP CAPACITORS C305, C306, C307
These ceramic chip capacitors are silver end terminated. Using ordinary 60/40
Sn/Pb solder may cause leaching of the silver into the solder resulting in loss of
bond strength. Therefore, a silver bearing solder should be used, e.g. 62 % tin,
36 % lead and 2 % silver.
The following points should be noted when replacing a chip capacitor:
— The silver end terminations may leach into the solder if they are immersed in
molten solder for too long a period of time. Remember that soldering iron
temperatures are often well above the melting point of the solder.
— Corners and edges may be chipped if capacitors are roughly handled with metal
tweezers. To avoid chipping, use plastic tweezers.
