Smartwares RM400 - Gas Detector Manual

GAS DETECTOR

These instructions for use contain important information which should be read carefully before use of the appliance. The alarm should be installed by a competent person. This apparatus is designed to protect individuals from the acute effects of gas exposure. It will not fully safeguard individuals with specific medical conditions. If in doubt consult a medical practitioner.

GENERAL

This detector detects both methane (natural gas), as well as propane and butane. For detection of these different groups of gasses the detector needs to be mounted in different locations. Please make sure to determine what type of gas you want to detect before installing (3). If you want to detect methane (natural gas), as well as propane and butane you will need to use 2 detectors! (this detector may not be used in caravans, tents and boats). The danger of these gases is that they mix with air to become highly inflammable; the tiniest spark could then set off an explosion. The gas detector has an adapter power supply and operates on a mains voltage of 230V~50Hz. The detector is a stand alone alarm and is therefore not connected to another system.

Contents
1x Detector
1x Adaptor
1x 9V battery (back-up)

IMPORTANT

  • This gas detector is designed to detect natural and petroleum gas.
  • The detector is NOT intended to detect smoke or fire.
  • This gas detector only indicates the presence of gas in the vicinity of the sensor.
  • The presence of gas in other areas of the house is not detected.

CAUTION

The adapter and 9V battery should always both be used. The supplied 9V battery is only for backup and may not be applied as an independent power supply. If the power fails, the detector automatically switches to the 9V battery and the green light will flash (every 3 seconds) instead of continuously lit.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Install the detector at least 1.5 metres away from a combustion source (e.g. cooker, boiler, etc). The installation height of this detector depends on the type of gas to be detected; you should therefore first establish which gas is being used. Methane (natural gas) are lighter then air, and therefor will rise. The detector should be installed Approx. 30 cm from the ceiling and 50 cm from the top of a ridge roof. Propane and butane are heavier then air, and therefor will flow to the ground. The detector should be installed Approx. 30 cm from the floor.

  • The gas detector is intended for use in a home.
  • The detector has a heat-up time of about 4 min. After the plug has been inserted in the socket, the red LED will blink for about 4 min. After this time the LED should turn green.
  • If the unit sounds every 4 seconds, this indicates the sensor is faulty.

DO NOT INSTALL IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES

  • Where the temperature is usually below -10 degrees or above 50 degrees.
  • Within 1 metre of a cooking facility.
  • In unventilated areas where paint, paint thinner or cleaning material are stored.

INSTALLATION

Mount the assembly ring with 2 screws in the right place. Turn the detector onto the ring. Make sure that the 2 bulges of the adapter ring come together. Insert the adapter plug into the detector; this can only be done in 1 way. Next, insert the 230V adapter into a socket. The detector now has a heat-up time of 4 minutes and will then be ready for use. After the red LED turns green, you can press the TEST button. Detector should be handled with care to avoid malfunction. The gas installation and shut-off device, if any, shall comply with the national regulations in force in the country where it's being installed.

WHAT TO DO IF THE ALARM GOES OFF

When the gas detector detects a quantity of gas, the red led and the alarm switches on automatically. The detector reacts to as little as Less than or equal to 10%. of an explosion dangerous quantity of gas. The higher the concentration of gas, the faster the detector reacts. The alarm is a pulsating alarm with the red and green lamp lit.

  1. When the alarm goes off, evacuate the premises immediately. Leave the windows and doors open. Absolutely do not switch on any electric appliance!!
  2. Call the fire brigade; they can trace the gas leak.
  3. Only enter the building again when the problem has been solved and the gas has disappeared.

If the unit is giving alarm, pressing the Test button will stop the unit for about 5 minutes. The red indicator LED will continue flashing. If you press the Test button again in the silenced mode, the silenced mode will be cancelled and the unit will monitor gas concentration again.

TEST AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

  • The green light must always be lit. This led indicates that the detector is switched on and everything is functioning properly. If the green led goes off, first look if the plug is still connected or that the socket is live. If this is not the problem, the gas detector has an internal failure and must be repaired or replaced.
  • Press the "TEST" button. The gas detector must give an alarm as long as the button is being pressed. The "ALARM" (red) led turns on. This indicates that the gas detector is functioning properly.

TIPS:

  • Clean the housing with a damp cloth. It is recommended to perform test and maintenance at least once a month.
  • Do not connect to a switched socket.

* The gas detector must be replaced after 5 years of use; after that period proper detection can no longer be guaranteed.
