Safety precautions

  1. Read and understand this instruction manual thoroughly before using shredder.
  2. Never allow children to shred or play with paper shredder or else serious injury could occur
  3. Do not place hands or fingers into the shredder throat as serious injury could result.
  4. Never shred adhesive labels or material containing glue or sticky substances as this will lead to paper jams.
  5. Do not use the shredder if the power cord is damaged in any way.
  6. Do not attempt to disassemble the shredder, as high-voltage live electricity and sharp cutting blades may be exposed, the warranty will also be voided.
  7. Never spray canned air or any type of spray lubricant into the shredder.
  8. Never spill any liquid into the paper shredder or serious injury could result.
  9. Keep all loose articles of clothing, ties, jewellery, hair or other small items away from the feed opening to prevent injury.
  10. Remove all paper clips or other metal fasteners from paper before shredding.
  11. Keep the shredder turned off, unplugged or switched off at power outlet when not in use for extended periods of time
  12. When manually changing feed direction, pause long enough for the motor to come to a complete stop to avoid possible damage to the motor.
  13. Always turn off and unplug the shredder before moving, cleaning or emptying the waste bin.
  14. Empty the waste bin frequently to avoid possible paper jams caused by shredded material being pulled back into the cutter blade assembly.

Setup

  1. The XC600 shredder should be placed on a flat level surface. The base of the shredder is fitted with castors for convenience. It is recommended that castors only be used to move the shredder when the shredder is placed on a hard smooth surface.
  2. Make sure that the waste bin is completely inserted into the shredder cabinet and that it fits flush with the shredder cabinet or the unit will not operate. Do not line the waste bin with a plastic bag.
  3. Plug the power cord into any standard 240 volt AC power outlet which should be located near the equipment and should be easily accessible.
  4. Toggle the Main Switch located on the rear of the top housing and depress the Power button. The Power LED should light up which indicates the shredder is ready for use.

Operating the shredder

With the electrical cord plugged in, Main Switch located on the rear of the head is in the ON position, the Power button depressed, shredder waste bin properly in place, the Power LED will light up. This means the shredder is now ready for operation.
The XC600 Power Button is located on the top front edge of the shredder. Also located on top of the shredder is the Power LED.

  1. When the Main Switch is in the ON position and the Power button is pressed, the shredding process will start automatically when a sheet is inserted into the feed opening and will continue until it has completely passed through the feed opening. The motor will continue to run for a few seconds to clear all shreddings from the blades before stopping.
  2. For bulk shredding operation, it is recommended that the shredder be fed up to 6 sheets together per pass, rather than one sheet at a time, this will reduce the shredding duration of the motor, thereby extending its life.
  3. For optimal preservation of shredder motor's usable life, please keep the duration of continuous paper shredding operation under 2 minutes, followed by a resting period of 30 minutes for the motor to cool down. Prolonged use of shredder without rest will cause the motor to slow down and eventually trigger the overload protection circuit (see below)
  4. The Reverse button is used to assist in the removal of a paper jam, when pressed the motor will reverse and release the sheet(s) fed into the shredder before a complete shredding (downward) cycle, thus clearing the cutters. When switching from Forward (downward) to Reverse (upward), always pause long enough for the motor to stop completely first to prevent possible damage to the motor.
  5. The Main Switch located on the rear of the shredder connects AC power to the shredder. It is recommended that the shredder be switched off and disconnected from mains power when not being used for an extended period of time.
  6. When the Power LED is lit up it indicates that the waste bin is inserted correctly and that the shredder is turned on and ready for use. If the Power LED does not light up during use, make sure that the power cord is plugged in, the waste bin is inserted correctly and the Power button is switched on.
  7. After emptying the waste bin and reinserting it into the shredder cabinet, the Power button must be pressed again in order to resume shredding.

Shredder capacity / Shredding small items

The XC600 will shred up to 6 sheets of 80gsm A4 paper and will accept paper widths up to 220mm. When shredding smaller items such as credit cards, envelopes or narrow sheets, insert them in the middle of the feed opening to activate the automatic start.

Shredding CDs/DVDs

CDs and DVDs should be inserted one at a time into the designated slot only. Shredding will start automatically upon insertion. Do not attempt to shred CDs/DVDs through the paper feed opening.

Thermal overload protection

The XC600 is equipped with an automatic thermal overload protection circuit. The shredder will automatically terminate power to the motor in the following situations:

  • Operating the shredder at/over the maximum 6-sheet capacity continuously for a prolonged period of time (typically over 4 minutes, depending on external factors such as paper thickness, quantity and ambient temperature) without rest.
  • Exceeding the shredding capacity in one pass, or if the sheets are not fed squarely into the feed opening allowing them to fold during the cutting pass. Please note a sheet folded in half is considered two sheets as the thickness is doubled.

The motor will slow noticeably as overloading occurs, it is recommended that the shredder be switched off and rested for at least 30 minutes, or the overload protection circuit will be triggered.

In case of a minor paper jam

If a paper jam occurs, always clear any jammed paper immediately and never allow the shredder to remain in a jammed condition with the AC power connected and shredder switched on.

  • Depress the Reverse button and pull the remaining sheets of paper out of the feed opening. Remove the unshredded portion of the sheets from the top and clear any excess paper shreds from the feed opening.

In case of a major paper jam – overload protection activated

  1. Turn off shredder at the Main Switch or unplug the power cord from the AC outlet and wait at least 45 minutes for the thermal overload protection to reset.
  2. Plug in the AC power cord, turn on the Main Switch and depress the Power Button. If paper was left inside the feed opening prior to the overload, press the Reverse button and grasp the excess paper from the top and pull it out. Be careful not to place fingers near the feed opening or serious injury could result. Clear any excess paper shreds from the feed opening.
  3. Normal shredding operation can now be resumed.

Maintenance

It is recommended that the cutting blades are regularly lubricated with a shredder oiling sheet (available separately). Do not use spray lubricant.
