  • Page 3 Congratulations on getting OCCO – world’s first and only interactive photography robot. This informal manual is intended to help you make most of the device throughout its lifecycle. Please read this manual before unpacking OCCO. Failure to follow specific steps for the setup may result in damage to the machine and voided warranty.
  • Page 4: Quick Start Guide

Quick Start Guide We understand that you want to get your OCCO up and running right away. While it is highly advisable (and necessary!) to read the detailed manual of the functions and the user interface before commercial deployments, this quick guide will help you see the result of OCCO’s work right away after unpacking it.
  • Page 5: Transportation

Some key things to remember when transporting or handling OCCO 1. Never allow OCCO’s weight to fall on the plastic head, the flash unit or the TV. The only safe way to store OCCO is either in the standing position, or in horizontal position after its properly packed inside the supplied transportation box.

In such case, it’s a good idea to put the entire case inside a tick cardboard box to prevent the case from damage by 3 parties.

Lift OCCO by the handles and lay it down into the case such that the head is as far as possible from the top of the case. We do not want the head to be hitting the case. If necessary, after laying down the body OCCO into the case, slightly lift it up by the clothing and slide it down as much as you can.

  • Page 15: Storage And Operating Environment

Storage and Operating Environment OCCO robot is an indoor only device. It cannot be used outside and be subject to weather elements, extreme temperatures or direct sunlight. Warning! NEVER plug in OCCO while the protective clothing is not fully removed. Failure to do so may result in permanent damage to the device and fire hazard due to overheating.
  • Page 16: Operation

 OCCO is best set up backed against a wall or a corner, not far from a power source. It is often the case that a better engagement is seen when robot is set up somewhat away from the most central location: people engage more readily, since there is less people watching.
  • Page 17: Choosing Location For Occo

Choosing location for OCCO OCCO uses a Canon SL1/SL2 DSLRs and is capable of generating great quality images. However, even the best equipment has optimal working environment. The location position for OCCO is backed against a wall or a corner with its flash pointed back and upward towards a neutral-colored background. This setup creates a diffuse light source called “bounced light”.
  • Page 18 2. Use an umbrella flash reflector. You can insert a standard umbrella-style studio light reflector into the back panel of OCCO (an opening near the flash unit). Make sure the flash is pointing upwards and illuminates the umbrella evenly...
  • Page 19 ISO. The power output of the flash is important. Every time OCCO is set up at a new location – it is imperative to take a few test pictures, adjusting the position and power output of the flash such that photographs within 1-2.5 meters (which is where over 90% of all photos will be) are properly exposed.

(mirrors, shiny marble, etc) or have large areas with distinct colors such as red or green. It will distort the color on the resulting images. If OCCO is set up in the middle of an open area, power cables have to be tucked away or taped up so people do not trip on it.

    – do it now using the supplied wireless keyboard. Note, OCCO’s screen should turn on automatically, if it not – it means you have turned off the TV – using the TV remote that comes with your robot – turn on the TV. In general, it is best to never shut the TV off when shutting down OCCO –...

  • Page 26: Managing The Watermarks And Brand Logos

Figure 15 Watermark upload console places. The dimensions of the watermark must be the same as the dimensions of the photos being uploaded to the OCCO cloud. By default, OCCO shoots in portrait orientation, and the uploaded size is 1200x1800 pixels.
  • Page 27 Figure 16 The effect of applying a semi-transparent watermark Notice how transparency levels on the watermark image are preserved. After selecting a watermark - be sure to test the entire pipeline by having OCCO take a test photo and requesting it (e.g. via e-mail).
  • Page 28: Managing The Texts In The E-Mails

When user select photos from the Event Stream and e-mail them to themselves, OCCO sends an e-mail to users with a link to their personal albums. It is up to the OCCO owner to decide how that e-mail should look like. You can change the subject line, the name that appears in the “From” field and of course the body of the e-mails.
  • Page 29 1/160 or below. OCCO Robot Controller software gives you a good level of control over DSLR settings. It is easiest to see and modify those settings using the wireless controller on the robot PC itself (also possible do from Remote Administration web interface).
  • Page 30 Default Settings By default, OCCO’s Canon DSLR is set to be in Tv (Shutter Priority) mode. This is done using the mechanical dial on the camera itself. Tv is a flexible option that will fit a variety of situations. We do not recommend using any other setting, except when activating a green screen.
  • Page 31: Head Actuation Range

Head Actuation Range In some cases, it may be needed to limit OCCO’s head actuation (motion) range. For example, if a backdrop is in uses, it may be nice to prevent the robot from taking pictures outside the surface area of the backdrop.
  • Page 32: Person Tracking Distance Cutoff

Another useful feature to control OCCO is the Distance Cutoff. Imagine OCCO is set up at a trade show, where it will be 4m from a staffed booth. We may want to prevent OCCO from taking 100s of photos of staff, and only react to guests that pass between the staff booth and the robot.
  • Page 33: Hot Folders

Hot Folders The software running on OCCO Models IC/S (version 2.2 and above) lets you upload any photos, not just the ones Robot takes, to the current album. It is a great option if you want to combine photos coming from multiple sources into a single online storage.
  • Page 34 Below is a description of the three “canned” hot folders. 1. C:\OCCO\HotFolders\UploadAsIs Any image file dropped into that folder will be uploaded to the current album (an event to which OCCO is connected to) without modification. All sizes and proportions will be preserved, and other than auto- orienting the image (so it shows up correctly oriented in the online album) - no post-processing will be done before the upload.
  • Page 35 Files that you drop to any of those two hot folders are immediately moved to “Uploaded” sub-folder, and OCCO gets to work trying to push them to the album. If upload succeeds – then files stay in the “Uploaded” folder, otherwise, if there was any sort of error, such as connectivity issues or processing failures –...
  • Page 36: Qr-Based Robot Activation (As Of 2019 Models Ic/S)

In some cases, you may want your robot to activate and start shooting only for pre-authorized customers, e.g. if a customer has a special app installed, or has purchased a physical ticket. Additionally, you or your clients may require an extra level of security and privacy of pictures when OCCO operates in public settings.
  • Page 37 Figure 25 OCCO's main screen in QR-based activation mode (left) and face screen (right) Once OCCO sees a valid scan – it will notify the user of a session start, switch to a normal mode and start taking pictures of people as usual.

  • Page 41 Figure 27 User interacting with OCCO's DACK. 8’ x 10’ green screen gives enough room to “explore” the virtual environment Green Screen technique is a somewhat technical subject, and it is highly advisable to learn general Chroma Keying techniques and best practices before using OCCO’s DACK at a critical commercial event.
  • Page 42 5. Same reason as #4 above, when using a green screen – DSLR’s mode dial must be set to shoot in Manual (M) mode, so you can have the same fixed set of camera parameters: a) Shutter Speed, b) ISO, c) Aperture.

Disabling Face Detection Requirement (Model C only, does not apply to Model IC) Under some conditions, OCCO will be unable to detect people’s faces. While very nice to have – OCCO does not “require” being able to see faces in order to operate. In some cases – it may be necessary to disable the face requirement algorithms, e.g.
