GAPS Maintenance - User Guide Replacing an Arm 1.1 Dismantling The following procedure explains how to remove one arm from the GAPS antenna. The required tool is a metric Allen key size 4. Set up the GAPS antenna upside down. Use the Allen key to unscrew the three socket head cap screws CHC M5-12 that fasten the arm to the antenna body.
Page 12
Alternately, gently and progressively unscrew and pull on the connector of the hydrophone to the GAPS housing in order to disconnect the connector. You have now removed the arm of GAPS from the GAPS main body. MU-GAPSMAINTENANCE-AN-001-B - November 2019...
Glue (e.g. Bostik 1400) Clean and rub with sandpaper the titanium insert of the male part of the connector. Check that the electrical pins are shiny. Contact iXblue if the pins are corroded (not shiny). Grease the two terminations of the connector.
Page 14
User Guide Spread some glue on the thread of the three screws. Make sure to install the arm at the correct location on the GAPS housing. Make sure to have the same labels on both items. Perform the screwing manually, do not use any tool. Alternately push and screw the connector to its plug until the pins of the male connector are fully inserted in the female plug.

3 N.m. The screws are made of titanium and should not be tightened too hard. Start tightening the two screws on the outside and finish by the screw on the inside of the GAPS housing. MU-GAPSMAINTENANCE-AN-001-B - November 2019...
However, the positioning repeatability of GAPS is preserved. See on figures below the amount of bias that may be introduced if no calibration is performed after the replacement of a faulty arm.
Verification of the accuracy (for the considered Signal to Noise Ratio) When GAPS system is calibrated by iXblue a very first time and then a calibration is needed each time a defective hydrophone or defective arm is removed for exchange with a new one.
2.2.2 USBLC VERVIEW OF USBLCal calculates the nine calibration parameters to be uploaded into GAPS through a configuration file. The main window shown below is made of the areas: ● File: opening of data files, choice of the language and display of the current file ●...
GAPS Maintenance - User Guide 2.2.3 ARAMETERS The parameters of USBLCal application are: Check box to activate when the input file is made of several Multiple Files small files. File File Count In case of multiple files, the number of files.
GAPS Maintenance User Guide 2.3 Calibration Procedure Calibration consists of the following steps: ● Deploying the transponder on a mooring: see section 2.3.1 ● Procedure: see section 2.3.2 > Sailing the first 8-shape navigation pattern and data acquisition > Loading data in USBLCal and computing the offsets that must be residual >...
8-shape navigation pattern is carried out by following a particular radius of curvature depending on the transponder depth. Water Depth The water depth depends on the accuracy of the GPS that is connected to the GAPS. ● With D-GPS: accuracy is around 1 m, water depth must be 1000 m or greater ●...

Check the logging directory in the GAPS Web-based User Interface. Align GAPS: ● Switch on GAPS and keep a stable position during at least 5 minutes (alignment). ● Perform 90° or 180° turns every 5 minutes with the vessel and check the heading standard deviation in the navigation page of GAPS Web-based User Interface.
Page 23
Start the acoustic tracking only when heading standard deviation < 0.07°. ● When heading standard deviation is below 0.07°, prepare the data logging with iXblue Multilogger provided with GAPS or with a standard hyper-terminal . Log repeater port 8210. Make sure to start logging before starting the tracking. ●...

Usually, at the end of the first 8-shaped trajectory, the last criteria (repeatability) should not be validated. Click on Save Configuration, store the configuration file CNF_File.xml. For GAPS III, contact iXblue technical support to get the specific procedure. In GAPS Web- based User Interface, open SETUP > SETTING MANAGEMENT . In RESTORE SETTINGS , load the configuration file and click on Restore Settings.

Second 8-shape trajectory: Log a new file and sail a second 8-shaped trajectory with the calibration data that were just computed. Again, if you are using an hyperterminal or iXblue MultiLogger, make sure to start logging before clicking on Start Tracking.
GAPS Maintenance User Guide 2.3.3 ALIDATING A ALIBRATION The next three criteria must be fulfilled to confirm that the calibration is successful. ● Criterion 1: The number of rejected points by the USBLCal (with the area radius) must be below 25 % of the total number of points.

Removing the Hydrophone This procedure is not recommended without iXblue assistance. The following procedure explains how to remove one hydrophone from an arm of the GAPS. The specific tool (MFC00259) used to push the hydrophone inside the arm is needed: Dismantle the arm from the GAPS antenna.
Inserting the Hydrophone in the Arm This procedure is not recommended without iXblue assistance. The following procedure explains how to install a new hydrophone on GAPS. Required tools: ● Three O ring seals (2 large R18, 1 smaller Ø22.5 x Ø3.0) ●...

GAPS Maintenance User Guide Install the three O-rings (2 groove O-rings and 1 support O-ring). Assembling Grease lightly the inside of the hole in the arm where the hydrophone goes. Thread the cable of the hydrophone inside the dedicated tool until contact between the tool and the hydrophone.
Page 31
Install the protective cap on the hydrophone head. Fasten the plastic screw. Do not remove the sticker on the protective cap. The hydrophone is now in position in the arm. The second part of the procedure is the fastening of the arm on the GAPS housing. MU-GAPSMAINTENANCE-AN-001-B - November 2019...
