Safety information

Unplug the appliance from the mains supply when not in use, or before cleaning any part of the appliance.

This appliance is for household use only.
Do not use the appliance outdoors or in damp or wet conditions.
Do not immerse the body of the rice cooker or the electrical cord or plug in liquids.
Do not use the appliance near a source of heat or on an unstable surface.
Never use the cooker pot to cook food in any form of oven or on any form of direct heat Make sure that the power cord does not touch any hot surface and that it does not overhang the edge of your work surface.
When unplugging the power cord, hold the plug top, not the power cord.
Do not use attachments or accessories which are not recommended by the manufacturer. They may cause malfunction or injury.
Store the appliance away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children.
Use oven gloves to remove the lid or to move the cooking pot during or immediately after use. RISK OF BURNS
There are no user serviceable parts in your appliance. Unauthorised dismantling or servicing will void the product warranty.
Do not operate the appliance with a damaged cord or plug or after the appliance or any component has been damaged. Seek expert assistance.
Use this appliance only as specified in this manual.
Use extreme care when moving an appliance containing hot food or other liquids. This appliance can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children unless they are older than 8 and supervised.
Keep the appliance and its cord out of reach fo children less than 8 years.

Overview

UNPACKING

Remove all packaging from the appliance and accessories Retain the packaging. If you dispose of it please do so according to any recycling regulations.
The packing includes

• The rice cooker appliance
• Rice cooking pot and glass lid
• Spoon and Measuring cup
• If items are missing or damaged, contact your nearest Tesco store for assistance.

The inner rice pot of this appliance must not be used in an oven or on any form of direct heat to avoid deforming the pot with the consequent risk of appliance damage and malfunction. The rice pot should be used only with this appliance.

USING YOUR RICE COOKER

IMPORTANT NOTE: When switched on for the first time the appliance may emit a slight odour. This is normal and will disperse within a few minutes.

Using the appliance for the first time:

• Wash the rice pot, spoon, measuring cup and glass lid in hot soapy water. Rinse well in clear water and dry carefully.
• Wipe the cooker body with a damp cloth containing a trace of dilute detergent. Remove all traces of detergent with a cloth damped with clean water. Dry thoroughly.

Before using the appliance:

• Ensure the appliance is stable and wellsupported.
• Check the lid has no cracks or other visible signs of damage.
• Ensure there are no objects in the rice cooker.

RICE COOKING PROCEDURE

• Measure the desired amount of rice with the supplied measuring cup or other suitable measuring jug. One cup of rice weighs around 150 grammes (0.18 litre).
• In a separate bowl rinse the rice several times until the water in the bowl shows relatively clear.
• Do not rinse rice in the cooking pot. If the pot is used for washing rice, the bottom may be deformed which will result in poor conduction with the heating plate.
• Make sure the heating plate and the bottom of the rice pot are clean and free from any particles.
• Place the rice pot in the cooker. $ Drain the rice well in a colander
• Spoon the rice into the rice pot with the provided spoon or a suitable non-metallic spoon and add salt to taste.
• If you wish you may add one teaspoon of vegetable oil per cup of rice. The oil keeps the rice grains separate and is recommended with Basmati and Long Grain Rice.

Adding Water
The simplest method to achieve perfect rice is the absorption method: the rice is cooked in a measured amount of water so that by the time the rice is cooked, all the water has been absorbed. As the water level drops, trapped steam finishes the cooking. As a general rule, use 1 cup of rice to 1 ¼ cup of water for long-grain white rice.
You may need to experiment a little to find the amount you like best. More water gives you softer, stickier rice—great for stir-fries. Less water results in firmer rice, a good style for rice salads.
Keep in mind that you need to adjust water to rice ratio. Brown rice requires more water. Shorter-grain rice requires less water.

Insufficient water can result in burned rice and damage to the rice cooker.

Too much water can cause overspill.

Add fresh water to the rice following the guide below.
(You may need to slightly adjust the amount of water due to variations between brands of rice and to suit personal taste).

In the rice pot there are a series of water levels. Do not add water higher than the maximum line (8 x180ml measuring cups, 1.5 litres ).
Before cooking: stir the rice lightly with a nonmetallic spoon to distribute the salt and any added oil through the rice.

Cooking the Rice

• Wipe off any spilt water from outside the cooking pot.
• Place the glass lid on the pot and ckeck it is firmly seated.
• Plug the appliance into the mains and switch on at the mains point. The "warm" light will come on.

When the Rice Cooker is connected to the mains it goes into the "warm" state. Plug the appliance in just before you cook the rice.

• Press the switch down to start cooking the rice. (If the switch is not pressed down, the cooker will remain in the "warm" state).
• Do NOT open the lid while the rice is cooking!!
• When the cooking is finished, the switch will pop up and a click will be heard.
• The rice cooker will now revert to "warm" status and keep the rice warm.
• Allow the rice to "rest" for 10 minutes with the lid closed. During this period the water vapour permeates the rice, making it fluffy and improving the taste.
• At the end of this period, open the lid and stir the rice gently but thoroughly with the supplied spoon or a suitable alternative to prevent the rice grains from sticking together. NEVER use a metal spoon or you will damage the non-stick surface.

The rice may now be served, or left to keep warm in the cooker.

Serving the rice

• When the rice is ready to serve, disconnect the appliance from the mains. Serve the rice directly from the cooker or remove the rice pot using oven gloves. If you remove the pot, stand it on a flat heatproof surface.
• When serving rice, use the spoon provided or a non-metallic spoon and make sure any grains that may be adhering to the spoon are all removed. NEVER use a metal spoon as this will damage the non-stick surface.

Care and Maintenance

After Use:

• Unplug the appliance from the mains.
• Allow the appliance and the pot to cool'
• Wash the rice pot and lid in warm soapy water.
  Residual food can be removed with a rubber spatula, a cleaning sponge or a cloth. Soak stubborn food deposits in warm soapy water before cleaning.
• Do not use abrasives or abrasive cleaning compounds either on the inside of the pot or the appliance body.
• To remove water spots and other stains from the appliance body, use a non-abrasive cleaner or vinegar.
• Wipe the body of the cooker with a damp cloth containing a trace of dilute detergent. Remove all traces of detergent with a cloth damped with clean water. Dry tthoroughly.
• Store the assembled cooker away from sources of heat and moisture and out of the reach of children and pets.

Maintenance

The cooker operates by contact between the bottom of the rice pot and the Hot Plate. Deformation in the Rice pot or foreign material adhering to the underside of the rice pot or the hot plate affects the transfer of heat and the rice will be undercooked. If the hot plate or the underside of the cooker pot is dirty or discoloured, lightly rub the surface with a damp plastic scouring pad and dry thoroughly. Ensure the rice pot base and the cooking plate are completly dry before operating the cooker.

When the pot is placed in the cooker the thermostat allows the cooker switch to be moved to the "cook" position. At the end of cooking or if the pot is removed the cooker will revert to the "warm" position. Cooker operation depends on free movement of the thermostat. If movement is impeded, brush the cavity around the thermostat with a suitable brush to free it.

WARRANTY

Your appliance is covered by a warranty for 12 months from the date of purchase. If a fault develops during this period, please return the unit to your nearest Tesco store together with the original receipt as proof of purchase. This warranty in no way affects your consumer rights.
