FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How are Netopia Broadband Routers used?
A: Netopia Broadband Routers can be connected to any existing DSL or cable modem
connection. The Netopia Router allows multiple users to share the broadband
connection and enables businesses and enterprises to deploy managed solutions to
retail locations, branch offices and teleworker homes. The Netopia Router turns any
basic broadband connection into a secure, multi-user, and remotely manageable end-
point in a corporate data network.
Q: What makes Netopia Broadband Routers unique?
A: Unlike conventional Cable/DSL routers from other vendors, Netopia routers come
standard with VPN and stateful firewall features designed for the enterprise user. There
are no expensive feature keys or software upgrades required.
Q: How can the VPN features be used?
A: The built-in VPN features in Netopia Broadband Routers allow enterprise users to
securely connect retail locations, branch offices, and teleworkers to the corporate data
center. Netopia VPN routers allow enterprises to securely transport private corporate
traffic over the public Internet. For branch offices and retail locations, using the Netopia
as the VPN end-point eliminates the cost and complexity of putting VPN clients on every
corporate PC on the remote LAN. For teleworkers who frequently work from home, using
the Netopia as the VPN end-point eliminates the need to launch the VPN client for every
secure session.
Q: What remote management features are supported?
A: Unlike conventional Cable/DSL routers, Netopia Broadband Routers are designed for
remote management by enterprise IT departments, VARs or IT consultants. Netopia
routers come standard with a menu-driven interface that is not only easy-to-use, but also
permits configuration of 100% of the router's features. For the advanced user, a robust
command line interface (CLI) is also available. Additionally, Netopia routers support
SNMP V1/V2 and Syslog for remote management of large numbers of installed routers.
Q: Is VPN acceleration supported?
A: Yes. The Netopia R9120-XL supports both built-in dial back-up and hardware-based VPN
acceleration. Other Netopia 3000-ENT models support an advanced RISC processor,
which speeds VPN throughput for "hub-and-spoke" VPN applications where the Netopia
routers are used in the spoke end of the connection.
Q: Do Netopia routers interoperate with other VPN devices?
A: Yes. All Netopia Broadband Routers support standards-based VPN technologies, such
as IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP. The most common multi-vendor configuration uses a large
and expensive IPSec VPN concentrator at the corporate headquarters, along with
Netopia VPN routers for the branch office, retail, and teleworker locations. Netopia has
tested and validated interoperability with Cisco, Netscreen, Nokia, Sonicwall,
Watchguard and others.
