Viper - Smart Gateway VERVIEW The Smart Gateway can be used as a traditional gateway following the normal Viper user guide procedures or you can choose to transition tasks where you previously used a laptop or a Virtual Machine to now directly run on the gateway. There is also an opportunity to connect instruments directly, eliminating the need for LINCs.

US EPA Environmental Response Team User Manual For Viper - Smart Gateway Section 1 – Using the External Ports on the Smart Gateway The Smart Gateway has four (4) external ports for connecting instruments. There is one (1) port to which a traditional gateway LINC cable can be attached (COMx), an Ethernet Port and two (2) USB ports which can be configured to communicate with RS232 Serial connections.

Used Space: Displays the amount of hard drive space used. The Smart Gateways have a 60GB hard drive. Alarms can be configured on the percentage of disk space used. Viper Survey Controller stores ‘raw and compiled’ data locally on the hard drive. Assuming that Survey Controller was pushing data to Deployment Manager, it is recommended that when a deployment is completed, the files stored locally on the Smart Gateway be deleted from the hard drive.

There are also two (2) WiFi radio frequencies – 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth.

Viper - Smart Gateway Disabling WiFi Security By default, the Viper Smart Gateways are configured with an SSID of EPAERT1 and require a security password. There may be some instances when having an ‘open’ WiFi connection is desirable (e.g., a LINC is not security enabled and cannot connect to the EPAERT1 network).

If the source of the internet access is behind a router and/or uses a private IP Address (vs. a Public/Static IP Address), Survey Controller running on the internal laptop will still be able to push data to Deployment Manager.
