Contaminants in the refrigerant can cause corrosion of the refrigerant piping, damage to the compressor, and lead to failure of the refrigerant circuit.

The AFS is normally open (NO) and ensures adequate airflow is available to support heating and cooling operations and serves as an interconnect for energizing the compressor or heat stages.
