DynaWrite will communicate with infrared systems. For more system specifications, you may want to read both the DynaWrite Basics section and Appendix D in this manual. How Can Additional DynaWrite Information and Support be Obtained? DynaWrite Basics This chapter describes the hardware features of your DynaWrite device. It also contains important information about setting up and maintaining your device. What’s in the Box? Carefully remove your DynaWrite and other items from the box. Your DynaWrite...
This indentation has a small opening for the device’s built-in microphone. This omnidirectional, electret condenser microphone can be used to record speech. Turn the DynaWrite upside down. You will find two labels on the bottom side of the device. The first label includes the DynaVox logo and your device’s unique serial number.

On the main label, between the DynaWrite logo and the DynaVox logo, is a small, circular opening labeled Reset. The Reset button can be accessed through this opening.

DynaWrite software. This port can Figure 3 also be used to connect your DynaWrite to a printer. The dual USB host port is on the far right of the front side. This port should be used as the host connection to other equipment, such as phones, external keyboards and printers.
DynaWrite Care and Handling Your DynaWrite device is easy to clean. With the unit turned off (shut down), simply wipe the display screen gently with a damp cloth or soft paper towel. You may want to slightly dampen the towel with a mild window cleaner to remove fingerprints, food particles and dust.
The Message Window The DynaWrite Message Window The primary feature of the DynaWrite’s display screen is the Message Window, a large text box which can be used for message composition. The DynaWrite display also features up to five word prediction boxes. These boxes can be located either below or to the left of the Message Window, depending on your selected setting in Rate Enhancement Controls menu.

The appearance of this icon indicates that the DynaWrite device is in Chat mode. To learn about the Chat mode, please refer to the Chat key entry in the DynaWrite Keyboard section of this manual. This icon appears whenever the Caps lock key is selected.

You can cut highlighted text by selecting both the Ctrl and X keys on your DynaWrite keyboard. To copy highlighted text, select the Ctrl and C keys. To paste text, use the arrow keys to place the cursor and then select the Ctrl and V keys.
For step-by-step information on establishing this connection, please refer to the Be the Keyboard and Xfer Operations instructions in the Step-by-Steps section. In Be the Keyboard mode, the DynaWrite keyboard can only be used to send keystrokes to a computer. The Message Window will be covered by a Be the Keyboard window which will inform you that keystrokes are being sent to the computer (see Figure 6).

Menu key will activate the Print Screen command. In addition, selecting the Speak key will trigger Scroll Lock. When the DynaWrite is being used to send keystrokes to a computer, selecting the Fn (Function) key in combination with the Home/NumLk key activates the DynaWrite number pad.

Window will appear over the one you have been working in. Use this window to create the desired conversation, then select Chat again to return to the original Message Window. When the DynaWrite is in chat mode, a small icon (a small face) will appear in the lower right corner of the display screen.

Message Window. Simultaneously selecting both the Home/NumLk key and the Fn (Function) key activates the DynaWrite number pad. This number pad is comprised of 15 alpha- numeric keys on the DynaWrite keyboard. Each of these keys feature small numbers or symbols on the lower right corner of the key face.

Transfer window will appear. In this window you may opt to transfer the contents of the Message Window or to choose a DynaWrite file. For more detailed information on transferring files, see the Be the Keyboard and Xfer Operations instructions in the Step-by-Steps section of this manual.

Controls menu. This menu contains a When Speak is selected group box. The check boxes in this group box allow you to set the DynaWrite to speak only the last sentence or paragraph in the message window, or to speak the entire contents of the message window.

Word4 and Word5. These keys correspond to the word prediction boxes below the Message Window. When DynaWrite’s word prediction feature is activated, DynaWrite will try to anticipate your words as you type. (For more information about word prediction, refer to the entry for Menu 6: Rate Enhancement Controls.) These anticipated words will appear in the word prediction boxes.
Holding down the Shift key when you select Tab will cause you to move through the items in reverse order. Many DynaWrite menus include list boxes. When a list box is active, you can use your arrow keys to scroll through the various options. As you scroll through a list box, a highlight will indicate your position.
Menus The DynaWrite Main Menu The Main menu is the DynaWrite’s highest level menu. To access it, select the Path: Menu key on your DynaWrite keyboard. The Main menu provides a path to the other menus you can use to customize the features of your DynaWrite device.

System Settings (Alt + Y). Selecting this button accesses the System Settings menu. This menu allows you to set DynaWrite hardware options like date, time, and password protection. This menu also includes a Battery Level progress bar and a report on available memory.
The macros option allows you to program in your own customized operations which the DynaWrite will use as shortcuts to activities or text you use frequently. For example, a macro can be created so that a single command sets in motion all of the steps for a telephone call.

ECU (Alt + E). The ECU button is the first button in the bottom row of the Tools menu. Choosing this button accesses the ECU menu, which provides tools for teaching your DynaWrite device to function as part of an X-10 infrared system or as a remote control for commercial appliances such as televisions and compact disc players Digitized Speech (Alt + S).
Files (Alt + I). The Files list box contains a list of saved directories and files. When this list box is active, use the up and down arrow keys on your DynaWrite keyboard to move through the list and highlight selections. To open a highlighted directory, select the Forward button.

Receive (Alt + V). The Receive button enables you to receive DynaWrite text files from a computer through a serial cable connection. Print (Alt + P). Selecting this button allows you to send DynaWrite text files to a printer through a USB or serial cable connection.

Call (Alt + L). Call is the first button in the Commands group box. When this button is selected, the DynaWrite will dial the number that has been entered above the telephone number pad. When a call is successfully dialed and has been answered, you will be returned to the Message Window.

Hold (Alt + D). Selecting the Hold button in the Commands group box temporarily suspends a telephone call and returns you to the Message Window. While a call is on hold, your DynaWrite will speak through its main speaker while playing music for the caller on hold. Hold will also be indicated by the appearance of a small Hold icon in the lower right corner of the DynaWrite display screen.

The output of the Message Window will be sent through the phone connection. When this box is unselected, the microphone is on. Sounds and speaking near the DynaWrite will be picked up and sent over the phone until the Speak button is selected and the Message Window contents are spoken.

Speech Controls The Speech Controls menu includes tools for customizing the way your Path: DynaWrite device speaks. With the features of this menu, you can select the voice, volume, rate, pronunciation exceptions, and other details of DynaWrite Menu/File key speech.

Test (Alt + T). The Test button lets you check the accuracy of your pronunciation exceptions. Scanning rate (Alt + R). The Scanning rate slider can be used to set the speed at which the DynaWrite scans. When this slider is active, you can adjust it by using the left and right arrow buttons on your keyboard. Moving the slider to the right, toward Fast, will increase the scanning rate.
Volume (Alt + V). You can use the Volume slider to adjust the volume at which auditory prompts are spoken. Using the arrow keys on your DynaWrite keyboard, move the slider up to increase the volume, and down to decrease it.

Scan prompts. Auditory scan prompts can be spoken publicly through your DynaWrite speakers or privately through an earphone. You can select or deselect private auditory scan prompts through the Private check box (Alt + P) in the Scan Prompts group box.

Menus You may choose to activate all of DynaWrite’s prediction settings at the same time. When all three word prediction settings are selected, DynaWrite will check first for context prediction, then word prediction and, finally, flexible abbreviation expansion. If the abbreviation expansion feature has been activated as well, the software will look to see if your typing matches a recorded abbreviation as it is predicting other words.

Speak System Messages (Alt + M). The Speak System Messages check box is part of the System Message Features group box on the right side of this menu. If this feature is selected, your DynaWrite will automatically speak all system messages and helpful hint messages.
DynaWrite device. The two options include None (no specified port) and Serial. Use the up and down arrow keys on your DynaWrite keyboard to highlight the appropriate option. BeKey/Xfer Port (Alt + B). You can use this combo box to select a port for Be the Keyboard mode and for sending information to a computer via Xfer.
