I bought the Dunelm extendable eyelet curtain pole and I am trying to install it. The problem I have is that the outer pole seems to be too big in girth to fit into the cup that supports the pole. I don’t want to use excess force in case the pole gets damaged. Can you help?

If the outer pole is too large to fit into the supporting cup, you can try using a pipe cutter to trim the pole to the correct size. A pipe cutter has a wheel that you spin around the pole while gradually tightening it until it cuts through. If the pipe cutter doesn't work, use a hacksaw as an alternative. Make sure to follow all steps for alignment and leveling as described in the instructions.
