General Training Tips Slow and Steady Does it: Your dog’s attention span is limited. Be patient with your dog. Proper boundary training is absolutely necessary for proper success of the Border Patrol unit. Please read the entire instruction manual and training manual before training. Ÿ...
Set Fence Boundary Before boundary training your dog, a visual boundary should be made in order to give your dog visual cues of the boundary. To do this: 1. See pg. 39 in your instruction manual to set your Fence boundary. 2.
Stage 1: Show Me Stage Show your dog the desired behavior. Do not put the Border Patrol collar unit on your dog in this stage. 1. Walk your dog on a leash in the “Safe” Zone. Your dog will NOT be wearing the Border Patrol unit in this stage.
Stage 2: Warning Cue Stage Teach your dog that the desired response after the warning signal is to go back to the Safe Zone. NOTE - Use a warning signal only (Vibration or Beep) in this stage. 1. Walk your dog on a leash in the Safe Zone with the collar unit powered ON and Fence activated.
Stage 3: Stimulation Cue Stage Teach your dog to associate correction following a warning cue and the desired response is to go back to the safe zone. 1. Be sure the warning signal in Fence settings are either V+S or B+S, depending on the type of warning signal used in the warning stage.
Stage 4: Distraction Stage Teach your dog to stay in the safe zone even with distractions introduced outside of the fence. 1. Keeping the same fence settings as the Stimulation Cue stage, keep your dog on a leash and introduce distractions outside of the boundary area. Examples of distractions can be people crossing from the Safe Zone past the boundary or children playing outside the boundary, etc.
Stage 5: Unleashed Supervision Stage Train your dog to stay within the fence boundary without a leash. 1. Be sure your pet has mastered all stages before starting the Unleashed Supervision Stage. 2. Keeping the same Fence Settings as the Stimulation Cue Stage and Distraction Stage, have your dog follow you towards the boundary without a leash.
Stage 6: Observation Stage Give your dog more freedom, but observe behavior to determine if additional training is necessary. 1. Observe your dog’s behavior off-leash frequently. You can also view the handheld unit to observe your dog’s behavior and general location. 2.
