Herreshoff S-Boat (1919)
Instructions:
Follow these instructions carefully and step by step. The rigging lines of the boat could tangle
easily so do not undo the lines until instructed.
1.
Unwrap the hull and stand. Place the hull into the stand with the hull facing forward to your right.
Keep the starboard side of the boat facing you in order to follow the instructions and to compare
with the diagrams.
1a.
Study the open eyes of A1, A2, A3, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and cleats 3, 4, 5, and traveler 1, 2 on
the deck. Also cleats 1, 2 on the bulkhead. They each have a fixed position that corresponds to
different rigging lines and sail sheets of the boat. See diagram (1)
2.
Unwrap the packing of the mast. You will find a brass hole near the bottom of the mast. The
brass hole must face towards the stern of the yacht. Insert the mast into the mast step in the
center of the deck.
2a.
On the mast, you will find one spreader with lines. Unfold the shroud lines from the spreader, run
the end of the line down to eyes A1 on each side of the mast. Run the lower shroud lines down to
eyes A2. See diagram (2).
2b.
Also on the mast, you will find two sets of running backstay lines. Unfold the upper running
backstay first and attach the lines to the brass eyes B on the deck. Then the lower backstay lines
to eyes B, too. See diagram (2)
2c.
Lastly unfold the running head-stay line down to eye F on the top of the bow. See diagram (2)
3.
Unpack all of the sails. You may want to press the sails with an iron to get out any wrinkles.
Each sail is numbered for convenience of set up. You should have sails 1, & 2. Do not remove
the numbers until the set up is complete. Compare each with the diagram, which shows the exact
location of each sail. See diagram (3)
3a.
Hook the top of the main sail no.1 to the uppermost eye on the mast. The main halyard goes from
the top of the main sail, then through a hole in the end of the mast and down through a hole in the
jumper
spreader.
back to the top of the cabin deck and wrap around the winch twice, tie off on the bulkhead cleat 2
on starboard side. Place the brass pin at the end of the boom into the hole near the bottom of the
mast. See diagram (3)
3b.
Find the hook with block on the end of the main sheet that should attach to eye G near the aft
nd
rail,the 2
hook with block on the aft traveler 2, run the line through eye H and wrap around the
cleat 5. See diagram (3)
3c.
Find sail no. 2. The jib halyard comes from the top of the jib sail, down the mast, through the
port side eye near the bottom of the mast, going back on the cabin top, wrap twice around the
winch and tie off on the cleat that is on the bulkhead on the port side. See diagram (3)
3d.
The leading edge of sail no. 2 should attach to eye F on top bow. Attach the jib sheet hook with
block to traveler, run the jib sheet through eye E and back on the deck, going under the traveler,
then through the eye C, up and through eye D and back to the cleat next to the winch.
Your Herreshoff S-Boat yacht should now be complete. Enjoy!
