Part I: Fast Track to Super Snaps
Custom Menu H, as shown in
Figure 1-37, contains one additional
critical setup option, File Name. This
option controls how file numbers
are assigned to pictures. By default,
the camera assigns each picture
file a number — your first picture is
P1000001.jpg, your second picture,
P1000002.jpg, and so on. (Chapter
4 decodes the rest of the filename
characters.) Even if you turn off the
camera or replace the memory card,
the camera remembers where the
numbering scheme left off and assigns
the next available number to your
next picture. If you change the File
Name option from the default setting,
Mode Guide: By default, the
camera displays a message similar
to the one you see in Figure 1-36
every time you change the camera
Mode dial to a new setting. The
idea is to provide you with a hint
as to the purpose of the mode.
You dismiss the screen by press-
ing the shutter button halfway.
The reminder screens are helpful
when you're first exploring the
camera, but after you understand
what each mode does, you may
prefer to disable them by setting
the Mode Guide menu option
to Off.
Beep: When you use autofocusing and press the shutter button halfway,
the camera emits a little beep to let you know that it was successful
in locking focus. The option that controls the beep is indicated on the
menu with a little speaker icon (refer to the third screen in Figure 1-35).
To silence the beep, set this menu option to Off.
Volume: This setting controls the default volume of the camera's inter-
nal speakers. (The circle of tiny holes on the camera back lead to that
speaker.) When you play a movie, slide show, or still picture that has
audio, you can adjust volume by pressing the up- or down-arrow key. See
Chapter 4 for more about playback and slide shows; and see Chapter 9 to
find out how to annotate a still photo with an audio clip.
Figure 1-36:
Press the shutter button halfway
to dismiss these screens; set the Mode Guide
option to Off to disable them altogether.
Figure 1-37:
Leave this option set to Auto so
you don't wind up with multiple images that
have the same filename.
