attached (Bolts/Nuts/Washers), 1 Wrench, 1 Spare Set of Hardware (Bolt/Nut/Washer)
DIAGRAM 1: PLATFORM YARD SWING ASSEMBLY

ASSEMBLY:

Remove the parts from the packaging and check that they are complete.
Check that each rope harness is correctly assembled as shown in the
Diagram 1, Assembly instructions.
Place the swing platform on the ground. Insert the foam-covered tube
frame pieces into each of the four side loops.
Connect the four tube frame pieces together. Ensure that one narrow end
and one wide end is put together in each case. Align the holes in both
pieces, insert the bolt with a washer through the aligned holes and place
another washer and a nut on the opposite end. Tighten using the wrench
provided. While the nut has a nylon sleeve designed to keep the bolt from
loosening, we recommend that the nut be checked for looseness before
each use.

HANGING THE SWING AND ROPE ADJUSTMENT:

Please note that this swing is designed to be used and hung from an existing
swing set in place of a conventional swing with su ciently strong swing
hooks and a nylon bearing. This swing does not include mounting hardware
for any other type of installation.
When the assembled swing set is installed according to the instructions in
this manual, the minimum clearance between the ground surface and the
underside of the swing shall be 20 cm (8 in).
Hang the swing from a suitable swing frame using the retaining rings
(Diagram 1). Hanging points must be at least as far apart as the swing seat is
wide plus an additional 10 cm (4 in). The swing has two ropes and adjust-
ment loops so that the height of the swing can be adjusted to t any suitable
hanging device. The swing ropes can be lengthened or shortened by
pushing or pulling it through the adjustment loops. No one should sit on the
swing while making adjustments. When making adjustments, ensure that
the ropes remain the same length on both sides. Di ering rope lengths will
cause undesirable circular pendulum motion of the swing. If in doubt,
perform a few gentle swings.
WARNING: Children have died when their clothing or drawstrings have been
caught on playground equipment or on fences. Children have also died
when they became entangled on ropes or skipping ropes attached to
playground equipment.
Always supervise children and teach them to use the equipment safely.
Tuck in all clothing that can get caught on playground equipment and
remove loose accessories such as scarves or dress-up capes.
Take o bicycle helmets before using playground equipment. Bicycle
helmets can get caught on equipment and strangle a child.

enclosing footwear. Clogs, ip ops and sandals must not be worn.
U.
Place disk swings* in separate bays, away from other swinging
equipment.
V.
Make sure that you have a safety clearance, in front and back, of at least 2
m (80 in) beyond the maximum reach of the swing. Clearance between
the swing and stationary components, such as swing sca olding, must
be at least 40 cm (16 in) on each side. Platform swing should be between
30 cm - 40.6 cm (12 in - 16 in); not to exceed 40.6 cm (16 in) high from the
ground. The maximum fall height (measured from the highest point in
the swinging arc) should not be more than 229 cm (90 in). Other
swinging components, such as a neighbouring swing, must be placed at
a distance of at least 60 cm (24 in) away, measured while at rest.
W.
Constant exposure to UV in sunlight can lead to fading of the colour, but
will not a ect performance or safety of the swing.
The swing should be dismantled and stored indoors if not used for an
extended period of time.

SELECT PROTECTIVE SURFACING

One of the most important things you can do to reduce the likelihood of
serious head injuries is to install shock-absorbing protective surfacing under
and around your play equipment. The protective surfacing should be applied
to a depth that is suitable for the equipment height in accordance with ASTM
F1292. There are di erent types of surfacing to choose from; whichever
product you select, follow these guidelines:
NOTE: Do not install home playground equipment over concrete, asphalt, or
any other hard surface. A fall onto a hard surface can result in serious injury
to the equipment user. Grass and dirt are not considered protective
surfacing because wear and environmental factors can reduce their shock
absorbing e ectiveness. Carpeting and thin mats are generally not adequate
protective surfacing. Ground level equipment—such as a sandbox, activity
wall, playhouse or other equipment that has no elevated play surface—does
not need any protective surfacing.
LOOSE FILL MATERIALS:
Maintain a minimum depth of 23 cm (9 in) of loose- ll materials such as
wood mulch/chips, engineered wood ber (EWF), or shredded/recycled
rubber mulch for equipment up to 2.44 m (4 ft) high; and 23 cm (9 in) of sand
or pea gravel for equipment up to 1.52 m (5 ft) high. NOTE: An initial ll level
of 30 cm (12 in) will compress to about a 23 cm (9 in) depth of surfacing over
time. The surfacing will also compact, displace, and settle, and should be
periodically re lled to maintain at least a 23 cm (9 in) depth. • Use a
minimum of 15 cm (6 in) of protective surfacing for play equipment less than
1.22 m (4 ft) in height. If maintained properly, this should be adequate. (At
depths less than 15 cm (6 in), the protective material is too easily displaced
or compacted.) • Use containment, such as digging out around the perimeter
and/or lining the perimeter with landscape edging. Don't forget to account
for water drainage. • Check and maintain the depth of the loose- ll surfacing
material. To maintain the right amount of loose- ll materials, mark the
correct level on play equipment support posts. That way you can easily see
when to replenish and/or redistribute the surfacing. • Do not install loose ll
surfacing over hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt.
POURED IN PLACE SURFACES OR PRE MANUFACTURED RUBBER
TILES:
You may be interested in using surfacing other than loose- ll materials—like
rubber tiles or poured in-place surfaces. • Installations of these surfaces
generally require a professional and are not "do-it-yourself" projects. Review
surface speci cations before purchasing this type of surfacing. Ask the
installer/ manufacturer for a report showing that the product has been
tested to the following safety standard: ASTM F1292 Standard Speci cation
for Impact Attenuation of Surfacing Materials within the Use Zone of
Playground Equipment. This report should show the speci c height for
which the surface is intended to protect against serious head injury. This
height should be equal to or greater than the fall height—vertical distance
between a designated play surface (elevated surface for standing, sitting, or
climbing) and the protective surfacing below—of your play equipment.
• Check the protective surfacing frequently for wear.

Placement:

Proper placement and maintenance of protective surfacing is essential. Be
sure to:
Extend surfacing at least 1.82 m (6 ft) from the equipment in all directions.
For to-fro swings, extend protective surfacing in front of and behind the
swing to a distance equal to twice the height of the top bar from which
the swing is suspended.
For tire swings, extend surfacing in a circle whose radius is equal to the
height of the suspending chain or rope, plus 1.83 m (6 ft) in all directions.
