    The Electronic Viewfi nder (EVF) The electronic viewfi nder provides the same information as the monitor, and can be used when bright lighting conditions make the display in the monitor diffi cult to see. Choose for group portraits (in vertical or horizontal orientations) to prevent the camera from focusing on the back- ground.

    Autofocus Although the camera boasts a high-precision autofo- cus system, it may be unable to focus on the subjects listed below. If the camera is unable to focus using autofocus, use focus lock (pg. 24) to focus on another subject at the same distance and then recompose the photograph.

    AE Lock To set exposure for a subject that will not be in the focus frame in the fi nal composition: Position the subject in the focus frame. Meter exposure. Press the AE-L button to meter exposure for the subject in the focus frame and then, keeping the AE-L button pressed, press the shutter button halfway to focus.

    F Macro Mode (Close-ups) For close-ups, press the selector left (F) to display macro close-up options. Press the selector left or right to highlight and press MENU/OK. When macro mode is in eff ect, the camera focuses on subjects near the center of the frame. Use the zoom control to compose pictures.

    N Using the Flash (Super-Intelligent Flash) When the fl ash is used, the camera’s Super-Intelligent Flash system instantly analyzes the scene based on such factors as the brightness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the camera.

    h Using the Self-Timer The camera off ers a ten-second timer that allows photographers to appear in their own photographs, and a two-second timer that can be used to avoid blur caused by the camera moving when the shutter button is pressed. The self-timer is available in all shooting modes. Set the timer.
  • Page 45 The self-timer lamp on the front of the camera will blink imme- diately before the picture is taken. If the two-second timer is se- lected, the self-timer lamp will blink as the timer counts down. Intelligent Face Detection Because it ensures that the faces of portrait subjects will be in focus, Intelligent Face Detection (pg. 22) is recom- mended when using the self-timer for group portraits or self-portraits.

    Metering Use the metering selector to choose how the camera meters exposure when In- telligent Face Detection is off .     Focus Mode Use the focus mode selector to choose how the camera focuses. The following options are available: Mode Mode AF-S (single) Focus locks while the shutter button is pressed halfway. Choose for stationary subjects. The camera continually adjusts focus to refl ect changes in the distance to the subject even when the shut- ter button is not pressed halfway (note that this increases the drain on the battery).

    Sensitivity The camera’s sensitivity to light can be adjusted by pressing the ISO button and rotating the command dial until the desired value is highlighted in the display. Higher values can be used to reduce blur when lighting is poor; note, however, that mottling may ap- pear in pictures taken at high sensitivities, particularly at settings above 1600.
