UsingthePapillonheadsupport A Papillon head support which is correctly mounted and used in the proper manner will provide optimum support for the head. Because of the head support’s modular character, plus the many accessories, highly complex posture and support problems can also be solved.
  • Page 12 during activities. You should take into account any undesirable factors, such as the lack of any posture support, support which is in the wrong place, and attempt to prompt reflex activity whilst sitting. • Likewise, the use of any major back adjustments, lateral movements of the torso, or slouching will affect the position of the head in relation to the head support.
  • Page 13: Assembling The Papillon Head Support

    • Before making a transfer by lifting, the head support first needs to be removed or swivelled to one side. • The best position for the head support needs to be determined on the basis of a careful assessment of the sitting posture. This assessment is usually carried out by the user in combination with his or her therapist.
  • Page 14 Fit the horizontal bracket onto this by tightening the screws on the clamping ring with the Torx key supplied. • Attach the frame of the Papillon head support to the ball on the horizontal bracket. • When tightening the two screws of the clamping rings, make sure that they are tightened in equal measure.

  • Page 17 • As indicated previously, one option is to choose a Papillon frame which has adjustable sockets for the suboccipital support pads. These can be adjusted by loosening the two Torx screws on the rear of the frame of the Papillon. Position the assembly sockets correctly and then tighten the Torx screws.

  • Page 19: A Few Commonly Mistakes

    • Is the head able to move to the right and left sufficiently? • Is the user able to breathe, eat and swallow without any problems? • Go through all these questions again if any of them have been answered with a ‘no’. •...
  • Page 20 Thescrewsoftheheadsupporthavebeendamaged asaresultofnon-originaltoolsbeingused. Torx screws are used with the Papillon head support. • Page 21: TheLateralSupportPads

The lateral support pads Description These support pads provide lateral support to the head if there is an abnormality in sideways movement. These lateral support pads therefore facilitate a better vertical position of the head. The lateral support pads also help prevent the head from turning aside as a result of an asymmetric tonic neck reflex (ATNR, a form of spasticity).
  • Page 22 • Remove the clamping ring by loosening the two Torx screws on the rear of the frame of the Papillon. • Push the retractable assembly bracket on the lateral support pad over the frame of the Papillon. Make sure that the red locking pin is on top.
  • Page 23: Configuring The Lateral Support Pads

    • Familiarise yourself properly with the various angles at which the lateral support pads can be adjusted: • A Linear adjustment (forwards/ backwards) • B Height adjustment • C Rotation • D Lateral adjustment Configuringthelateralsupportpads • Discuss typical postural and movement patterns with the user. Likewise consider overall postural support.
  • Page 24 • The bracket of the lateral support pad can be adjusted in two directions (in height and in rotation). Move the bracket of the lateral support pad so that this provides support to the head in the required spot. • Tighten the screw on the underside of the folding mechanism.
  • Page 25 Please note! Avoid positioning the lateral support pad directly on the lower jaw, over the ear or close to the eye socket. Make adjustments if this causes irritation. Stop using if, despite all this, the irritation continues and contact your dealer or therapist. The bracket to which the lateral support pad is attached is always designed to swivel. The swivel mechanism is on the rear of the bracket and can be recognised by a redbutton. The bracket can be swivelled by pressing Athe red button, which unlocks the bracket and Bcan be swivelled.

    • Continue to monitor the user during initial use. Whennottousethedynamicforeheadstrap Do not use the dynamic forehead strap with users who - for example, on account of a behavioural disorder or intellectual disability - move their head or pull on the cords in an uncontrolled fashion. Do not use the dynamic forehead strap with users who for other reasons (for example, who maintain a poor position of the head or who have attention disorders) need constant supervision, but where this supervision cannot be guaranteed. Do not use the dynamic forehead strap in combination with headrests supplied by other manufacturers. In a number of situations, the dynamic forehead strap cannot be used in combination with the lateral support pads. • Page 31: Important

Important! Serious injury or choking can occur if the forehead strap is not properly used. Anyone using the dynamic forehead strap - the user and the carer/therapist - needs to be instructed about its proper use. Keep a close eye on the user when the system is being used. The tension is regulated by means of cord locks which are located on either side of the system. The tension should not be too tight as to cause a reddening of the forehead from excess pressure. Neither should the strap be too loose so that it can drop down over the eyes, nose or chin! Discontinue using the system immediately if the the user experiences discomfort, slipping, redness or irritation. Anyone involved in the use of the system should be trained in its use. Seek out expert help - usually an experienced therapist or supplier - if any adaptations to the system are necessary.
