Chuck Operating Instructions
FOR USE ONLY ON DC986
WARNING: For your own safety, read the tool instruction manual
before using any accessory. Failure to heed these warnings may
result in personal injury and serious damage to the tool and the
accessory. When servicing this tool, use only identical replacement
parts.
TO INSERT A BIT (FIG. 1, 2, 3)
WARNING: Always wear ANSI Z.87.1 safety goggles or other
eye protection while operating this power tool.
1. Rotate the chuck sleeve (A) to chuck mode (B), as shown in
Figure 1.
2. As shown in Figure 2, insert the bit about 3/4" (19mm) into the
chuck. Holding the back part of the bit, turn the drill on in the
forward direction to close the jaws of the chuck. For optimal
performance, place the drill in Speed 3 and run two or more
seconds.
NOTE: Once the jaws are closed, an impacting noise is made.
The longer the drill runs, the tighter the jaws lock onto the bit.
3. After tightening, rotate the chuck sleeve (A) to drill mode (C)
to lock in place, as shown in Figure 3.
WARNING: Always ensure the bit is secure before starting the
tool. A loose bit may eject from tool causing possible personal injury.
4. To remove the bit, rotate the chuck sleeve (A) to chuck mode
(B) from drill mode (C). Power the tool in reverse. Direct the
tool and bit toward the floor/ground and away from yourself
and any bystanders. Run the drill in Speed 3 until the jaws
retract to release the bit.
WARNING: Always ensure the bit is secure before starting the
tool. A loose bit may eject from tool causing possible personal
injury.
Drilling in Wood
Holes in wood can be made with the same twist drills used for
metal. These bits may overheat unless pulled out frequently to clear
chips from the flutes. For larger holes, use low speed wood bits.
Work that is likely to splinter should be backed up with a block of
wood.
Drilling in Metals
Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are cast
iron and brass which should be drilled dry. The cutting lubricants
that work best are sulphurized cutting oil or lard oil; bacon grease
will also serve the purpose.
Drilling Masonry
Use carbide tipped masonry bits at low speeds. Keep even force on
the drill but not so much that you crack the brittle materials. A
smooth, even flow of dust indicates the proper drilling rate.

positioned for right- or left-hand use. When the side handle is not
attached, grip the drill with one hand on the handle and one hand
on the battery pack.
