Cutting and drilling the blank
Cut 19mm or larger pen blanks to the size of the
brass tube (add 27mm for trimming).
Drill a 14.7mm hole through the upper, shorter
blank and a 12.5mm through the lower, larger
blank.
Either use a drill press with the blank secured in a
vice or clamp or use your lathe with a drill bit
mounted into the tailstock chuck.
To prevent cracking or chipping of the wood when
the drill bit exits the other end of the blank, stop
drilling 3mm before the bit drill reaches the end of
the blank and then trim the end of the blank using
a saw to expose the hole.
Glue the brass tube into the blank
Using 200 grit sandpaper, lightly scuff the exterior
of the brass tube to prepare it for gluing.
Apply a thin layer of superglue or epoxy to the
tube and insert the tube into the blank. Rotate the
tube as you push it into the blank to spread the
glue evenly – this must be done fairly quickly to
avoid getting the barrel stuck before it's inside the
blank.
Position the tube inside the blank so that the
wood extends beyond the tube on both ends to
allow for trimming.
Turning the blanks
Slide 7mm spacer bushings onto the mandrel
shaft, followed by the tip bushing, wide end first.
Slide on the lower blank. Next, add the centre
bushing, narrow end first and place the upper
blank followed by the cap bushing, smaller
diameter first. Add additional spacer bushings as
necessary to reach the mandrel threads.
Thread on the lock-nut hand tight and bring the
tailstock in a snug to the mandrel, lock in place.
Tighten the lock nut for turning,
Do not over tighten the lock-nut, it could damage
the mandrel.
Turn the barrels close to the bushing diameter
with sharp tools; sand the barrels to match the
bushing diameter.
Finish the wood with your choice of polish.
