    Front Seats Manual Seats This section tells you about the seats – how to adjust them, and fold them up and down. CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving.

    Power Seats If your vehicle has this feature, there will be a control on the outboard side of the front seat(s). Horizontal Control: Raise or lower the front of the seat by raising or lowering the forward edge of the control. Raise or lower the rear of the seat by raising or lowering the rear edge of the control.

    Power Lumbar If your vehicle has this feature, there will be a control located on the outboard side of the front seat(s). Press and hold the front of the control until you have the desired lumbar support. To decrease lumbar support, press and hold the rear of the control.

    Reclining Seatbacks To adjust a manual seatback, lift the lever on the outboard side of the seat. Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it. To return the seat to an upright position, pull up on the lever without pushing on the seatback. If your vehicle is equipped with the vertical power seat control described in Power Seats on page 1-3, pressing it rearward allows the seatback to recline.

    CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job because it won’t be against your body.

    Rear Seats Rear Seat Operation The rear seatback can be tilted forward to let you reach the area behind it. To tilt the seatback forward, lift up on the lever located at the base of the seatback on the driver’s or passenger’s side and then push the seatback forward.

    If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far from home, why should I wear safety belts? You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident – even one that isn’t your fault – you and your passengers can be hurt.

    Driver Position This part describes the driver’s restraint system. Lap-Shoulder Belt The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear it properly. 1. Close and lock the door. 2. Adjust the seat so you can sit up straight. To see how, see “Seats”...
  • Page 21 5. To make the lap part tight, pull down on the buckle The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on end of the belt as you pull up on the shoulder belt. the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones.
  • Page 22 What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much protection this way. 1-16 CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. The shoulder belt should fit against your body.
  • Page 23 What’s wrong with this? The belt is buckled in the wrong place. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at the pelvic bones.
  • Page 24 What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-18 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.
  • Page 25 What’s wrong with this? The belt is twisted across the body. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    Right Front Passenger Position To learn how to wear the right front passenger’s safety belt properly, see Driver Position on page 1-14. The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same way as the driver’s safety belt – except for one thing. If you ever pull the shoulder portion of the belt out all the way, you will engage the child restraint locking feature.
  • Page 28 To make the belt shorter, pull its free end as shown until the belt is snug. Buckle, position and release it the same way as the lap part of a lap-shoulder belt. If the belt is not long enough, see Safety Belt Extender on page 1-26. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.

    Rear Seat Passengers It’s very important for rear seat passengers to buckle up! Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Rear passengers who aren’t safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle in a crash.
  • Page 30 2. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. When the shoulder belt is pulled out all the way, it will lock. If it does, let it go back all the way and start again.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. 1-26 Safety Belt Extender If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you.

    Child Restraints Older Children Older children who have outgrown booster seats should wear the vehicle’s safety belts. If you have a choice, a child should sit next to a window so that the child can wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide.
  • Page 34 1-28 CAUTION: Never do this. Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt can’t properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. What if a child is wearing a lap-shoulder belt, but the child is so small that the shoulder belt is very close to the child’s face or neck?

    CAUTION: Never do this. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt.
  • Page 36 Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles, they should have the protection provided by appropriate restraints. Young children should not use the vehicle’s adult safety belts alone, unless there is no other choice. Instead, they need to use a child restraint. 1-30 CAUTION: People should never hold a baby in their arms...
  • Page 37 CAUTION: Children who are up against, or very close to, any air bag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Air bags plus lap-shoulder belts offer outstanding protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants.
  • Page 38 For most basic types of child restraints, there are many different models available. When purchasing a child restraint, be sure it is designed to be used in a motor vehicle. If it is, the restraint will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards.

    Child Restraint Systems An infant car bed (A), a special bed made for use in a motor vehicle, is an infant restraint system designed to restrain or position a child on a continuous flat surface. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward the center of the vehicle.
  • Page 40 A forward-facing child seat (C-E) provides restraint for the child’s body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T-shaped or shelf-like shields. 1-34 A booster seat (F-G) is a child restraint designed to improve the fit of the vehicle’s safety belt system. Some booster seats have a shoulder belt positioner, and some high-back booster seats have a five-point harness.
  • Page 41 How do child restraints work? A child restraint system is any device designed for use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children. A built-in child restraint system is a permanent part of the motor vehicle. An add-on child restraint system is a portable one, which is purchased by the vehicle’s owner.

    Where to Put the Restraint (Crew Cab) Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat. We, therefore, recommend that child restraints be secured in a rear seat outside position, including an infant riding in a rear-facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward-facing child seat and an older child riding in a booster seat.

    If a forward-facing child seat must be secured in the vehicle’s right front seat, the seat should be moved back as far as possible. However, it is better to secure the restraint in a rear seat. Wherever you install it, be sure to secure the child restraint properly.

    Anchor the top strap to one of the following anchor points. Be sure to use an anchor point located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed. CAUTION: Each top tether bracket is designed to anchor only one child restraint.
  • Page 45 Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) Your vehicle is equipped with the LATCH System. It is available in the second row outboard seating positions and in the front passenger position. This system, designed to make installation of child restraints easier, does not use the vehicle’s safety belts.
  • Page 46 In order to use the LATCH system in your vehicle, you need a child restraint designed for that system. To assist you in locating the anchors for this child restraint system, place your hand in a palm-up position and reach up between the seat cushion and the seatback.

    CAUTION: If something is between an occupant and an air bag, the bag might not inflate properly or it might force the object into that person causing severe injury or even death. The path of an inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don’t put anything between an occupant and an air bag, and don’t attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other air...

    What Makes an Air Bag Inflate? In an impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. The sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the air bag. The inflator, air bag, and related hardware are all part of the air bag modules inside the steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the right front passenger.
  • Page 57 CAUTION: When an air bag inflates, there is dust in the air. This dust could cause breathing problems for people with a history of asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe to do so.

    Servicing Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle Air bags affect how your vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the air bag system in several places around your vehicle. You don’t want the system to inflate while someone is working on your vehicle. Your dealer and the service manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the air bag system.

    Adding Equipment to Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle If I add a push bumper or a bicycle rack to the front of my vehicle, will it keep the air bags from working properly? As long as the push bumper or bicycle rack is attached to your vehicle so that the vehicle’s basic structure isn’t changed, it’s not likely to keep the air bags from working properly in a crash.

A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash.     Keys CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The children or others could be badly injured or even killed.
  • Page 63 This vehicle has one double-sided key for the ignition and door locks. It will fit with either side up. When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer provides the owner with a pair of identical keys and a key code number. The key code number tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys.

    Remote Keyless Entry System If equipped, the keyless entry system operates on a radio frequency subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules and with Industry Canada. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1.
  • Page 65 Remote Keyless Entry System Operation If your vehicle has this feature, you can lock and unlock your doors from about 3 feet (1 m) up to 30 feet (9 m away using the remote keyless entry transmitter supplied with your vehicle. UNLOCK: Press UNLOCK to unlock the driver’s door.

    Battery Replacement Under normal use, the battery in your remote keyless entry transmitter should last about two years. You can tell the battery is weak if the transmitter won’t work at the normal range in any location. If you have to get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works, it’s probably time to change the battery.

    Doors and Locks Door Locks CAUTION: Unlocked doors can be dangerous. • Passengers — especially children — can easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle will not open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors are not locked.

    Power Door Locks If your vehicle has power door locks, the switch is located on the armrest. Remove the ignition key and press LOCK to lock all the doors at once. To unlock the doors, press the raised area next to the key symbol.
  • Page 69 The following instructions detail how to program your door locks. Choose one of the programming options before entering the programming mode. To enter the program mode, do the following: 1. Begin with the ignition in OFF. Then pull the turn signal/multifunction lever all the way toward you and hold it while you perform the next step.

    Rear Door Security Locks Your vehicle is equipped with rear door security locks. With this feature, you can lock the rear doors so they can’t be opened from the inside by passengers. The security lock lever is located on the inside edge of each rear door.

    Windows CAUTION: Leaving children, helpless adults, or pets in a vehicle with the windows closed is dangerous. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather.

    Power Windows If you have power windows, the controls are located on the armrests on each of the side doors. The switches operate the windows when the ignition is in RUN, ACCESSORY or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. See “Retained Accessory Power (RAP)”...

    Sliding Rear Window If your vehicle has this feature, squeeze the latch in the center of the window and slide the glass to open it. When you close the window, be sure the latch is engaged. Sun Visors To block out glare, you can pull the visor down. You can also swing the visor from side-to-side.

    3. Close all doors. The SECURITY light should go off after approximately 30 seconds. The alarm is not armed until the SECURITY light goes off. If a door is opened without the key or the remote keyless entry transmitter, the alarm will go off. Your vehicle’s headlamps will flash and the horn will sound for 110 seconds, then will turn off to save the battery power.

    ® Passlock Your vehicle is equipped with the ® Passlock theft-deterrent system. ® Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. ® Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled.

    Ignition Positions With the key in the ignition, you can turn it to five different positions. Notice: Lengthy operation of features such as the radio in the accessory ignition position may drain the battery and prevent your vehicle from starting. Do not operate your vehicle in the accessory ignition position for a long period of time.

    Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Your vehicle is equipped with a Retained Accessory Power (RAP) feature which will allow certain features of your vehicle to continue to work for up to 20 minutes after the ignition key is turned to OFF. Your radio, power windows, sunroof and overhead console will work when the ignition key is in RUN or ACCESSORY.

    Notice: Your engine is designed to work with the electronics in your vehicle. If you add electrical parts or accessories, you could change the way the engine operates. Before adding electrical equipment, check with your dealer. If you do not, your engine might not perform properly.

    Automatic Transmission Operation Your automatic transmission has a shift lever on the steering column. There are several different positions for your shift lever. It features an electronic shift position indicator within the instrument cluster. This display must be powered anytime the shift lever is capable of being moved out of PARK (P).
  • Page 81 Make sure the shift lever is fully in PARK (P) before starting the engine. Your vehicle has an automatic transmission shift lock control system. You have to fully apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is in RUN. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever–push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application.
  • Page 82 DRIVE (D) should not be used when towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, driving on steep hills, or for off-road driving. Select THIRD (3) when operating the vehicle under any of these conditions. THIRD (3): This position is also used for normal driving, however, it offers more power and lower fuel economy than DRIVE (D).
  • Page 83 Transfer Case The transfer case buttons are to the right of the steering wheel on the instrument panel. Use these buttons to shift into and out of four-wheel-drive. You can choose among three driving settings: 2HI (Two-Wheel Drive High): This setting is for driving in most street and highway situations.
  • Page 84 Shifting from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO To shift from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO, the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than 3 mph (4.8 km/h) with the transmission in NEUTRAL (N). The preferred method for shifting into 4LO is to have your vehicle moving 1 to 2 mph (1.6 to 3.2 km/h).

    Parking Brake The parking brake is located near the bottom of the instrument panel on the driver’s side of the vehicle. To set the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot. Push down the parking brake pedal with your left foot.

    Brake Wear Your vehicle has four-wheel disc brakes. Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.     Brake Adjustment Every time you make a brake stop, your disc brakes adjust for wear. If you do not have four-wheel drive and your brake pedal goes down farther than normal, your rear drum brakes may need adjustment. Adjust them by backing up and firmly applying the brakes a few times.
