B889 - Fan Fold Unit B889: FD6500A (Fan Folder) B890-17/-27: FD6500B (Fan Fold Unit) Slide 1 PURPOSE OF THE SECTION The mechanisms of the optional Fan Fold Unit will be explained. In the ‘video’ folder of this course, there are four videos to illustrate how the Fan Fold Unit works.
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Model Details The FD6500A can be installed with the B286 and D046/D049. When installing with D046/D049, it is necessary to install the Bridge Unit BU6500 (D407). B890-17/-27: FD6500B (Fan Fold Unit) must be connected with B890-57 (Transport and Cross Unit).

B889 - Fan Fold Unit What is the Fan Fold Unit? The Fan Fold Unit receives output from the copier, folds it, and feeds it out to the exit at the bottom rear of the unit. Outputs can also go...

B889 - Fan Fold Unit Optional Manual Feeder Manual Feeder Main Machine Fan Fold Unit An optional manual feeder unit can be attached to the top of the Fan Fold Unit. Outputs made previously (or even on another machine) can be fed from this manual feeder through the Fan Fold Unit, and these outputs will be folded.

B889 - Fan Fold Unit Turning on the Power The power on/off sequence is important. To turn the Fan Fold Unit on 1. First, switch on the Fan Fold Unit. 2. Next, switch on the main machine. The Fan Fold Unit must be turned on first. Otherwise, the Fan Fold Unit will not recognize the main machine.
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Operation Modes If the manual feeder is installed, there are three operating modes. Full operation mode System offline mode Independent offline mode Slide 8...
Page 9
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Full Operation Mode The main machine and Fan Fold Unit are both powered on and online. If the Online indicator is not lit, press the Online/Offline button to put the folder online. Paper feeds from the main machine.
Page 10
B889 - Fan Fold Unit System Offline Mode The main machine and Fan Fold Unit are both powered on, but the folder is offline. If the Online indicator is lit, press the Online/Offline button to take the folder offline. Each unit can be used independently of the other.
Page 11
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Independent Offline Mode The main machine is turned off, but the Fan Fold Unit and manual feeder are turned on. If the Online indicator is lit, press the Online/Offline button to take the folder offline.
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Important Points - 1/2 The Fan Fold Unit can handle plain paper only. Do not feed translucent paper or OHP transparencies through the Fan Fold Unit. If the humidity at the work site is extremely high, turn on the heater switch of the Fan Fold Unit.
Page 13
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Important Points - 2/2 When a fan fold is adjusted, the last surface will be shorter than the others, because the lengths of the others have been increased. For example, if fan folding is increased by +0.05 inches for a job where three folds are done to create four surfaces, +0.5 will be added to the first 3 surfaces but the last surface...

B889 - Fan Fold Unit Components Slide 14 See the component list in the service manual. In the part names, (R) means Rear, and (F) means Front. This is necessary because there are two folding mechanisms, one towards the front of the...

The two fan fold plate motors control the movement of the folder plates, which form the folds in the paper.
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Firmware Update - 1/2 Prepare IC card with new version of firmware. Switch off main machine. Switch off Fan Fold Unit. Remove left upper cover and lower left cover. Insert IC card into slot of MCU board as shown at left.

B889 - Fan Fold Unit Folding - 6/8 Fan Fold Plate (R) Fan Fold Plate Motor (R) Fan fold plate motor (R) turns on. This lowers fan fold plate (R). The plate pushes the paper between the fan fold rollers (L). This makes the second fold.
Page 27
B889 - Fan Fold Unit Folding - 7/8 The second fold is made. The process continues as described earlier. Slide 27 The cycle repeats until all the folds are completed: The fold plate motors alternate the raising and lowering of the fold plates to push the paper into the front and back fan fold rollers that form the folds.
