PROBA network. Operation of the PROBA ripening system The bananas in the ripening room are ripened by means of ripening programs. In the PROBA ripening system the length of these programs and the temperatures are adjusted each day.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 6 of 78 During a number of days (the length of the program, in this case 4) a temperature setpoint is setup for each day. On a given day, the PROBA110 regulates the temperature in the ripening room to be equal or close to that particular value. The length of a ripening program can be varied from 1 to 9 days.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 7 of 78 The PROBA110 Control of the PROBA110 The control computer PROBA110 can be controlled fully via its front panel. If the PROBA110 is connected to a Personal Computer there is also the possibility to control the PROBA110 from this Personal Computer. In both cases all process parameters of the PROBA110 are adjustable.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 8 of 78 2.1.1 Key switch The key switch located at the top right of the front panel of the PROBA110, has three positions: The PROBA110 is switched off. The displays and the LED's are off, there is no regulation.
Page 9
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 9 of 78 After pressing the TEMP/VENT key once more, the average temperature is shown in the display again. If there is no temperature regulation, pressing the TEMP/VENT key has no effect.
Page 10
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 10 of 78 If the ripening room is not ventilating at the moment, the upper display indicates the time in hours till the next ventilation. If there is no more ventilation, the lower display shows four horizontal bars.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 11 of 78 2.1.3 Programming and starting a ripening program Depending on the internal settings of the PROBA110, several program steps can be skipped. This is to prevent fixed settings having to be programmed every time and make the programming longer than needed.
Page 12
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 12 of 78 A second gasification can now be programmed. If a gas concentration sensor is used, the gas concentration for the second gasification can be programmed. If no gas concentration sensor is used, the gas supply time is programmed for the second gasification.
Page 13
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 13 of 78 If ventilation is not required, the ventilation time should be decreased as much as possible. The display text reads 'OFF'. Finally the ventilation interval of the first ventilation is programmed. This interval time determines for how many hours ventilation should take place.
Page 14
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 14 of 78 steps to day 1 and the clock will count from 00.00 hours. While programming the PROBA110 will use the last settings of that program as default. If a ripening program is adjusted during programming or during the ripening process, these changed values are default settings for the next time the program is used.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 15 of 78 2.1.4 Stopping a ripening program Make sure that the key switch is in the PE position. When a ripening program is running a flashing LED in the DAY row shows which day is currently active.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 16 of 78 Rotate the key switch to ON. Remove the key to prevent unauthorized use. 2.1.5 Changing the temperature setpoint To allow the ripener to change the ripening program whilst it is running, it is possible to change the setpoints of the program days.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 17 of 78 2.1.6 Changing the relative humidity setpoint If a sensor for relative humidity is connected to the PROBA110, the user can change the setpoint of the humidity control. Make sure that the key switch is in the PE position.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 18 of 78 2.1.7 Changing the pressure setpoints If a sensor for pressure control fans is connected to the PROBA110, the user can change the setpoints of the pressure control fans.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 19 of 78 2.1.8 Standby In the STANDBY mode the PROBA110 will regulate for an unlimited time on a fixed setpoint temperature in the ripening room. This STANDBY mode for example can be used if products other than bananas are stored in the ripening room.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 20 of 78 Now press the SET key and the STANDBY mode is switched off. The temperature regulation stops, the ripening room will not be kept at a constant temperature. Also the STANDBY LED will not light anymore.
During this time the PROBA110 will indicate that there is gas present and the door of the ripening room can be locked. After the SET key is pressed, the PROBA will start with gasification. Ventilation will be stopped if gassing is started.
Page 22
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 22 of 78 Rotate the key switch to ON and remove the key. Please note: If the ventilation is stopped, all programmed ventilations of the ripening room are stopped. No more ventilation takes place, because the first as well as the second cycle is switched off.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 23 of 78 2.1.11 Changing the program clock During the course of a ripening program, it is possible to change the program clock of the PROBA110. The length of a program can be made shorter by stepping forward or longer by stepping back.
To prevent unauthorized use, turn the key switch to ON and remove the key. 2.1.13 Zone and heating switch The PROBA can control a maximum of three zones. lf one of the zones is not used, it can be switched off. In a zone that is switched off no temperature is regulated.
Page 25
To prevent unauthorized use, rotate the key switch to ON and remove the key. Please note: If heating is switched off and heating is required by the control, the HEAT LED's on the front of the PROBA start flashing, to indicate that the HEAT- OFF function is active.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 26 of 78 Error messages The PROBA110 has a large variety of ways to detect errors and failures. These are shown in an error code in the lower display, while the ALARM LED lights, the buzzer is on and the ALARM relay makes contact.
Page 27
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 27 of 78 Non Fatal Errors can be recognized by the letter 'F' in the display, followed by a number code. The meaning of the number is: Temperature sensor x at fault. The regulation continues by using the operational temperature sensors.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 28 of 78 The Personal Computer The PROBA110 can be connected to the computer. There are two versions from the PC software. There is a DOS version and a Windows version.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 29 of 78 4.1.1.3 Network If the PROBA110 is connected to a network, a small printed circuit board (the network interface) has to be present. This printed circuit board is standard mounted by VDH, so that the PROBA110 is always prepared for a network connection.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 30 of 78 Rotate the key switch to the ON position and remove the key from the switch. Please note: Unless stated otherwise when setting parameter, 0 = NO and 1 = YES.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 31 of 78 Explanation: 0101 With this parameter settings for program 1 can be fixed into the memory of the PROBA110. The moment parameter is changed to 0, the present settings of program 1 become default. This means that every time that program 1 is used, these values will be the starting point for programming.
Page 32
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 32 of 78 1330 When using pressure control fans, this parameter should be set to 1. Instead of the RH setpoint, there are two pressure setpoints. One for when the fans rotate in forward and one for when they are reversed.

VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 34 of 78 1401 During execution of a ripening program, the setpoint can be changed in three different ways: 0 = Only for the current day. 1 = All programmed temperatures are decreased or increased by the same value as the present setpoint.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 35 of 78 1801 This parameter determines if the absolute minimum/maximum alarm 1 is always active, or only during control (program or standby). 1803 At an absolute minimum/maximum alarm 1 no alarm relay, the non fatal alarm relay or the fatal alarm relay be activated.
Page 36
36 of 78 The PROBA110 offers the facility to give random functions to relays or inputs. Only skilled users of the PROBA are advised to use this function. In case of doubt, it is always possible to contact the specialists of VDH Products BV.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 37 of 78 Network and the PROBA120 The VDH network is a 'daisy-chain' type network. This means the connection from the PC (over the PROBA120, the interface) goes from PROBA110 to PROBA110. It is not allowed to connect the last PROBA110 back to the PROBA120, so that a loop is made.
PROBA120 v3.04). Together with the PROBA120, VDH Products delivers a serial cable with 25 pin D-type connector on one end and a 9 pin connector on the other end. If the Personal Computer has a 25 pin connector, almost all local computer shops can supply a 9 to 25 pin adapter.
4.5.2 Sensors for product temperature regulation This method of temperature control resembles the way the predecessor of the PROBA, the BA192, regulates the temperature. Although the function of each sensor is free programmable, the following configuration is used most: It makes use of a maximum of seven (but mostly three) product sensors which are placed in the boxes with bananas.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 40 of 78 Relative humidity sensor Like the gas concentration sensor, the relative humidity sensor should be located in a place where the measured value corresponds to the true relative humidity in the ripening room.
VDH Products BV Document 063319 - version 3.12 Page: 41 of 78 Relay outputs The relay board of the PROBA110 contains 16 relays. These control the ripening room (via a switch cupboard) and the alarms. The specification of all the relays contacts are: 10 A / 250 VAC and 10 A / 30 VDC (cos ...
