    1.0 Introduction CBS Products Ltd is a long established U.K company situated in rural Oakham, Rutland. From its 4-acre site, CBS design, manufacture, test and market a comprehensive range of quality products for the electricity, telecommunication and CATV industries. Products include overhead line and underground winches, cable drum trailers and stands, stringing equipment, in fact everything required for the installation or erection of conductors and cables.

    2.0 Safety Instructions The Duct Calibration Sonde is operated employing pneumatic compressed air upto 3 bar (45psi). Compressed air has a potential energy to expand and accelerate materials, therefore care should be taken at all times during the operation to keep the pressure as low as possible.

    3.0 General Description The Duct Calibration “Sonde” and Detector have been designed to ensure that ducts being employed for cable blowing have unrestricted bores, or locates the point(s) where ducts are damaged or restricted. This operation should be conducted prior to the cable blowing operation and the ducts left capped and sealed.

    “Sonde” standard housing is 22 mm diameter, (other sizes available ). Two duct seals fitted (Two spares) to suit specified duct bore One Electronic Sonde Signal Generator and Battery (C-RD-SONDE-F) 33 kHz (8xAA batteries) One Catcher Stocking (E-958-3810) One Set of Operating Instructions One Detector:- Radiodetection Model complete with batteries (C-RD-CAT-F) Maximum depth of operation 1.9m.
  • Page 8 5.0 Operation Instruction See diagram Figure 1 for typical layout of a duct requiring calibration prior to cable blowing. To calibrate the duct the following procedure should be employed. Fit the catcher stocking to the Exit End of the duct. Ensure that stocking is applied at least 200mm over the end of the duct.
  • Page 9 Always check the operation of the sonde and detector before inserting the sonde into the duct. DO NOT PROCEED IF SIGNAL IS NOT DETECTED. Rectify the fault and proceed. Always check the condition of the duct seals, replace if necessary. Set the compressor to 3 bar (45 psi) or pressure regulator in the duct line to 3 bar.

Replace if necessary (see figure 5.1.1) ensure that “O” ring seal is fitted correctly (see fig 5.1.2). It is recommended that a spare battery is always available.
  • Page 11 Detector Refer to the instructions on the detector body before using the unit. Check the condition of the batteries (it is recommended that a spare set of batteries are always available). Replace if necessary. Check the function of the detector with the sonde unit. If either are not working correctly NOT PROCEED until the fault has been rectified.
