16-296 20-102-XX DESCRIPTION: The Retractable Pit Ladder provides an effective means for safely entering the pit of an elevator hoistway. It collapses to under 2” thick when not in use, and expands to 8” away from the pit wall. The Retractable Pit Lad- der can be customized to work in a wide variety of pit depths and sizes, and is designed to be installed directly onto the wall of the pit.

16-296 20-102-XX FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS Retractable Arms As the name indicates, the Retractable Pit Ladder has a system of arms which allow the ladder to be ex- tended or retracted off of the pit wall. The arms are spring loaded to offset the weight of the ladder and make it easier to retract.
16-296 20-102-XX Safety Switch A Safety Switch assembly is included with the Retractable Pit Ladder, with the key attached to the side rail of the ladder and the switch attached to the Wall Mount. When the ladder is in its retracted position, the key is inserted into the switch to complete the elevator safety circuit.
16-296 20-102-XX SET UP Ladder Sections The Ladder Sections for the Retractable Pit Ladder come in 4’ and 6’ increments. They consist of the following components and quantities: Size Rungs Rails 3/8” Thread-cutting screws 4’ 6’ 1. Fasten the rungs to the rails using the 3/8-12 X 1.25” Thread-Cutting Screws. Leave out the top rung on ladder sections that will be attached to another ladder section.
16-296 20-102-XX Wall Mount Assemblies 1. Attach the Wall Mount Assemblies to the ladder using 3/8-16 X 1” Button Head Cap Screws with a washer between the Tubular Arm and the ladder rail, and a 3/8-16 Nylon Insert Lock Nut. This connection should be snug, but the arm should be able to rotate freely.
16-296 20-102-XX Safety Switch 1. Wire the Safety Switch to the controller per ASME A17.1 (2013) Code. 2. Attach the Switch to the Wall Mount Bracket using the 6-32 X 1.50” Button Head Screws and Serrated Hex Nuts. 3. With the ladder in a retracted position, insert the key into the switch and press the Key Bracket against the ladder rail.
16-296 20-102-XX Positive Stop 1. Unscrew the Handle from the Socket Shoulder Screw. 2. Place the Socket Shoulder Screw and compression spring through the 7/8” hole on the inside edge of the top Retraction Arm closest to the Sill landing.

16-296 20-102-XX 3. Place the Stopper Channel over the Retraction Arm and screw the Handle back onto the Socket Shoulder Screw.
16-296 20-102-XX 4. Test the Positive Stop for proper mechanism action by pulling the handle. This should compress the spring and move the Stopper Channel out to a point where it no longer intersects with the Ladder Rail. Operation To toggle the Retractable Pit Ladder between its retracted and expanded states: 1.
