Flat Lot Spacing Guidelines
To ensure reliable wireless communication to the
luminaires, the following six guidelines should be
observed.
1. Luminaires should be placed no farther than 150 ft
(45.7 m) apart.
2. Luminaires should not exceed 3000 ft (914.5 m) from
the gateway.
3. The gateway should be mounted in a location such
that it is within 150 ft (45.7 m) of three or more
luminaires and without dense metal between itself
and the luminaires.
4. The gateway should be located a minimum of
2 ft (0.6 m) away from dense metal obstructions
(including electrical panels).
5. The gateway should be at or above ground level. If
this is not possible, three nodes should be within
50 ft (15.2 m) of the gateway.
6. If there is more than one wall between the gateway
and nodes, three nodes should be within 50 ft
(15.2 m) of the gateway.

Spacing Guidelines
To ensure reliable wireless communication to the
luminaires, the following 5 guidelines should be
observed.
1. Luminaires should be placed no farther than 50 ft
(15 m) away from one another.
2. The gateway should be mounted in a location such
that it is within 50 ft (15 m) of three or more different
luminaires.
3. Luminaires should not exceed 500 ft (152 m) from the
gateway.
4. The gateway should be located a minimum of 2 ft
(0.6 m) away from dense metal obstructions (including
electrical panels) in an element protected location at a
height of no less than 6 ft (1.8 m).
5. For Parking Garages, nodes should be no further
than 4 floors above or below the gateway. (i.e. If the
gateway is on floor 1, then nodes can be on floors
1–5. If the gateway is on floor 5, then nodes can be
on floors 1–9).

Gateway Mounting – Flat Lot Location Examples
Example 1 (Correct): A gateway is located inside a utility building. Luminaires spaced
140 ft (42.7 m) apart run past the utility building. The gateway is 50 ft (15 m) from the
closest luminaire but still within 150 ft (45.7 m) of 3 luminaires.

Gateway Mounting – Parking Garage Location Examples
Example 1 (Correct): An 800 luminaire facility has a gateway located in a utility room
near the center of the facility (ex: level 3, 4 or 5 of an 8 level parking garage). At least three
luminaires should be within 50 ft (15.2 m) of the gateway. This can include luminaires that
are above or below the level on which the gateway is mounted.

Example 2 (Incorrect): A gateway is located inside a utility building on one end of the
property with one luminaire 150 ft (45.7 m) away from the gateway. Additional luminaires are
spaced 150 ft (45.7 m) apart on the far side of the first luminaire. This is undesirable for
two reasons:
1. It creates a single point of failure. If the one luminaire between the gateway and the rest of
the luminaires fails, then the gateway will no longer be able to control the other luminaires.
2. It creates a bottleneck for wireless traffic. All messages to and from all the luminaires at
the site must pass through the single luminaire between the gateway and the rest of the
luminaires.

Example 2 (Incorrect): A 500-800 luminaire facility has a gateway located inside a utility
room on the lowest level at the end of the parking garage. Only one luminaire is within 50 ft
(15.2 m) of the gateway. Additional luminaires are spaced an additional 50 ft (15.2 m) away
from the first luminaire. This is undesirable for two reasons:
1. It creates a single point of failure. If the one luminaire between the gateway and the rest of
the luminaires fails, then the gateway will no longer be able to control the other luminaires.
2. It creates a bottleneck for wireless traffic. All messages to and from all the luminaires at
the site must pass through the single luminaire between the gateway and the rest of the
luminaires.
