Getting Started

System Requirements: An available OHCI-compliant FireWire port and/or USB 2.0 or 1.1 port (USB 2.0 PCI adapter card or built-in

USB 2.0 host is required for Hi-Speed USB 2.0 performance). PC users require Windows
require Mac ® OS 9.2.2; built for Mac OS X v10.1.3 or later.
IMPORTANT: It is strongly recommended that you install the latest service packs and updates for both operating systems to obtain
the highest performance and reliability. For PC users, run Windows Update on your system or see the user manual for specific links.

Setting Up

For further instructions, refer to the user manual on the installation CD or download at support.wdc.com/download.
Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP
1. Insert the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. The program will autorun and
launch an initial setup wizard. Select the appropriate option to install drivers and
Retrospect Express software. When prompted, click Next (Figure 1).
2. When the license agreement displays, click to accept the terms. Then, select the
Recommended installation option and click Next.
Note: If you are running Windows 98SE/Me/2000 and the necessary updates are not
installed, you may need to restart the computer before installation can proceed.
3. Launch the backup software from the Start menu (Start > Program Files >
Retrospect > Retrospect 6.5) to register the software. Proceed to section 3.
Mac OS v9.2.2 or later
IMPORTANT- Macintosh Users: You must format or reinitialize the drive using Apple's Disk Utility prior to using the installation CD
on your system. Skip to section 3 to connect the unit; then follow the steps below to format and setup the drive.
1. To format the drive, select Control Panels > Extensions Manager from the Apple menu.
2. Disable File Exchange from the extensions list by clearing the adjacent check box and click Restart.
3. After restart, a message appears asking you to initialize the drive. Enter a name and select Mac OS Extended and click Initialize.
4. Click Continue to confirm drive initialization. A hard drive icon with the name you assigned will appear on the desktop after the
formatting process is completed. To re-enable File Exchange, select the check box in Extensions Manager and click Restart.
5. Insert the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the drivers and backup software.
6. For the Media Center, go to section 4. Otherwise, skip to section 5 to set up the backup software.

Mac OS X v10.1.3 or later
1. To format the drive, select Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select your new
drive on the left side and click on the Erase tab on the right panel (Figure 2).
2. Select Mac OS Extended from the Volume Format menu and enter a name for your
drive in the field.
3. Click Erase to begin drive format. A hard drive icon with the name you assigned will
appear on the desktop after the formatting process is completed. To partition the
drive into multiple volumes, select the Partition tab from the Disk Utility program
menu and the follow the instructions.
4. Insert the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. Follow the onscreen
instructions to install the drivers and backup software.
5. For the Media Center, go to section 4. Otherwise, skip to section 5 to set up the

backup software.

Connecting the Unit

Type I and II,
CAUTION: Do not drop or jolt the unit or attempt to open the unit to service it yourself. These actions void the warranty.
Select Your Interface Configuration:
USB and FireWire - The memory card reader and USB hub transfer files to and from your computer through the USB connection

while the drive utilizes FireWire.
USB only - The drive, memory card reader, and USB hub utilize the USB connection.

FireWire only - The drive utilizes the FireWire connection. On the Media Center, the memory card reader and USB hub are inactive.

Connect the Interface Cable(s):
1. Connect one end of the power cord into the DC power supply
socket located on the back of the unit.
2. Attach the other end of the AC adapter to the end of the
electrical cord. Plug the other end into an electrical outlet.
3. Attach one end of the USB 2.0 interface cable to the USB 2.0
port (to system) located on the back of the unit.
4. Connect the other end of the USB 2.0 interface cable to an
available USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 port on your computer. USB 2.0
provides much greater performance than USB 1.1
If also using the FireWire interface:
1. Attach one end of the FireWire interface cable to a FireWire
port located on the back of the device.
2. Connect the other end of the FireWire interface cable to an
available FireWire port on your computer.

Press the Safe Shutdown Power Button:

1. Press the power button to turn on the unit. The area around
the power button will illuminate blue. Go to your My
Computer window and an external drive icon named

"WD MediaCtr" will appear.
2. Press the button once more to power off the drive only (the
media reader and USB hub will still be active). This is
recommended at the end of the day.
Note: If you press the power button while there is an active
window open, the software will prompt you to continue before
powering down. To power off the drive regardless if any active
windows are open, press and hold the button for four seconds.
3. For the Media Center, go to section 4. Otherwise, skip to
section 5 to set up the backup software.
