9/125 µm fibers. A power meter is required to make these measurements. We recommend the OLP-6 from Acterna. In addition to its unmodulated light mode, the OLS-6 also has three modulation frequencies for identifying fibers in a fiber bundle, for example.
  • Page 6 270 Hz, 1 kHz or 2 kHz can be selected. Two other modes are also available: Unmodulated light and Auto-λ. The latter function indicates the current wavelength to a power meter from Acterna (e.g. OLP-6, -8, -15, -16, -18).

Connector cables This makes faulty measurements due to im- proper wavelength settings on the power meter a thing of the past. The wavelengths and modes are set using the membrane keypad. When powered from two standard batteries (AA/Mignon), the device can be operated free of the a.c.

Appropriate usage This device left our factory in perfect working or- der. Please note the safety information that fol- lows in order to safely operate it and keep it in good working condition. Proper usage Only use the device under the conditions descri- bed in this manual and for the purposes for which it was designed.

Warning notice Invisible laser radiation! The radiation can cause irreparable damage to the retina if you do not exercise caution. Warning When the device is switched on, Þ never look directly into the output or into a connected optical fiber. Always close the cables in order to protect other persons from ac- cidental exposure.

Commissioning The last statement also applies if the device is stored at a high temperature. Commissioning The OLS is powered from batteries or NiCd cells: • Two 1.5 V dry batteries, (Mignon/AA size) • Two 1.2 V NiCd cells, (Mignon/AA size) The typical operating life depends on the device version as well as the cell type.

  • Page 19: Selecting The Wavelength

Selecting the wavelength You can use the “λ” key to select individual wave- lengths or the Dual mode (ALL) (Circular func- tion). In single-wavelength mode, you can select from two switch positions: “1310 nm” and “1550 nm” (“780 nm” and “1300 nm”). The third position (“ALL”) activates both wavelengths si- multaneously.

  • Page 21: Avoiding Contamination

Avoiding contamination In all modes except unmodulated light, the aver- age power drops by 3 dB. This is due to the mod- ulation on which the signal coding of the AU mode is also based. Avoiding contamination The FC-PC connector system uses direct con- tact between the optical fibers.

The display is broken down in steps of 5%. Due to the differing voltages of the primary cells, the percentage figures are precise only for dry batteries.

NiCd cells As an alternative to the batteries, you can use two rechargeable 1.2 V cells (Mignon AA size) in the OLS-6. Fresh NiCd cells provide an operat- ing life of approx. 20 hours. For information on using the charger, see the separate charger manual.
