4 Troubleshooting

4.1 Mechanical troubleshooting

Trouble
Capstan motor does
not run at either speed
Noisy capstan
Tape speed too low
Capstan runs at 3 3/4
but not at 7 1/2 ips
Pinch roller arm does
not operate
Brakes do not release
Push-button will not
remain in pressed
position
End of tape switch
does not operate
Cause
Speed switch in mid-position
Speed switch defective
Jamming motor
Jamming capstan bearing
Felt of the lower bearing
damaged
Loose flywheel
Damaged capstan-bearing
Damaged motor bearing
Open-circuit motor-winding
Faulty motor condenser

Recorder too cold and drag

Dirty solenoid
Dirty contacts in the push-
button assembly
Dummy-plug of remote
control removed

How to repair
Switch to 3 3/4 or 7 1/2
speed
Replace wafer
Clean and lubricate
bearings (2.2.2.)
Replace capstan assembly
Replace felt and lubricate
with SAE 20 oil
Tighten fastening nut
Replace capstan assembly
Replace motor
Replace capstan motor
Replace motor condenser
Replace capstan assembly
Run at 3 3/4 for a few
minutes. Recorder will
then pick up to 7 1/2 ips
Clean and adjust solenoid
(2.2.3.)
Clean and adjust solenoid
(2.2.4.)
Connect pin 1, 2 and 3 of
the remote control socket
Clean and adjust solenoid
(2.2.3.)
Clean and adjust contacts
(2.2.4.)
Connect pin 1, 2 and 3 of
the remote control socket
Adjust (2.1.5.)
Thread the tape as
explained in the instruction
manual
Clean and adjust (2.2.3.)
Adjust (2.1.5.)
Replace light bulb Osram
3644
Carefully clean the
opening.
