7. How to Play After assembling STAR SHOOTER, let’s play. STAR SHOOTER is able to keep the ball inside and shoot it out. It will be fun to play games with friends. ● Suggested games In order to play a game, there must be rules. The rules will vary in different types of games.

③ Sumo wrestling game ○ Game objectives : Play sumo wresting single match. The one who pushes the other to outside of the ring wins. Re- modeling of the machine is optional: hands for pushing, add a bumper for extra protection. ○...
1. Explanation of Controller ・ The role of controller STAR SHOOTER is able to move forward, backward, rotate and shoot the ball by controlling the motors’ rotating direction, with three switches of the controller. The role of controller is: 1. To turn on and off each motor, 2. To decide the rotating direction of each motor.
Page 25
・ The role to turn on the motor PCB printed pattern. When the switch contact is pushed, it connects with the printed pattern and the electric current will flow. The direction Connecting to this Regular rotation of the elec- side makes the reg- tric current ular rotation.
2. Explanation of Mechanism The STAR SHOOTER uses the “gear mechanism,” which transmits the rotational power from the motor to the wheels and rotors. Gears are used for many devices around you. They have not only the function to transmit the power but other important roles. Here are various functions of the gears.
Page 27
● Functions of Gears 1) Changing the direction of rotation 90 ° The direction of rotation becomes opposite. 2) Changing the rotating speed 40 teeth 10 teeth One rotation makes next gear rotate one-fourth. The speed is reduced to one-fourth. 3) Changing the torque the number of motor Lever...
Ⅲ. Explanation of Molding 1. Molding Procedure The robot has many plastic parts for its body and the controller. There are many plastic products around you also. When you compare the same plastic parts from the same products, you can see they have exactly the same form. Otherwise, the parts could not fit with the matching parts or the products would have uneven quality.
Page 29
・ Extrusion molding Extrusion molding is used for plain plastic parts, such as plastic sticks and boards. A plastic stick is made through pressing out the melted plastic from a round opening. The board is made through a thin flat opening. Changing the shape of the opening, various kinds of plastic can be made. The section deciding the shape is called a die .
2. Molded Plastic Parts The plastic parts made by these molding techniques have some characteristics. You can find them on the parts used for this robot as well as other plastic parts around your house. Here, the typical phenomena is explained in the case of injection molding. ・...
Page 31
・ Weld line As explained in the previous pages, the molds have the shape exactly opposite of the plastic part. Therefore, to make a projection on the plastic, the mold must have a hole for it, and to make a hole in the plastic, the mold needs to have a pin for it. When the mold has the pin, it will divide the stream of the melted plastic.
Ⅳ. Explanation of Gears 1. Types of Gears The robot uses several types of gears in the mechanical section. There are a lot more gears used in different ways. Here is the explanation about the types of gears used around us. ・...
Page 33
・ Crown gear The crown gear has a shape like a crown. The characteristic of the crown gear is that the axis of this gear makes a right angle with the axis of the engaging gear next to it. The crown gear is not suitable for transmitting large power but can be made easily.
2. Mechanism of Gears Gears transmit the motion by engaging each other. If the gears are not in mesh properly, they cannot convey the rotation and power, disabling the work of the mechanism itself. Here, you can learn how to engage the gears properly. ・...
Page 35
・ Distance between the gears will become gears by providing teeth.: The circles touching each other..The size of the pitch circle changes the dis- tance between the gears. ・ What is the module of the gear? Figure A: Figure B: Same pitch circle but different tooth size Same tooth size but different pitch circle ↓...
Ⅴ. Explanation of Tools You will use some tools for assembling the robot. There are many other useful tools for handicrafts. These tools are explained here. 1. Types of Tools ・ Screwdriver A screwdriver may be the one of the most familiar tools for everyone. It is a tool to turn a screw.
Page 37
・ Diagonal cutter A diagonal cutter is for cutting the parts. The diagonal cutter used for electronic and mechanical assembly is for cutting off the legs of electronic parts and plastic parts, which are rather easy to cut. So it is not suitable for cutting very hard materials like a piano wire. You need to be careful not to damage the edges of the blades.
Page 38
The following tools are not used for building this robot but are often used for electronic and mechanical assembly. ・ Nutdriver In some processes of mechanical assembly, there may be a case that you need to turn a nut instead of a screw, when the screw is fixed already, for instance. Also in some cases, it is better to turn the nut securing the screw with a screwdriver in order to fasten them tightly.
