22. 2 Mechanical Faults

Dragging noise
Excessive warming up
Strong vibrations
Bearing warming up excessively
Bearing noises
Possible cause of fault
        Rotary parts are dragging
     
       Air supply reduced
     
       Unbalance of the rotor
     
       Rotor not circular, shaft deformed
     
       Imperfect alignment
     
       Unbalance of the coupled machine
     
       Shocks from the coupled machine
     
       Irregularities from the gear
     
       Resonance with the foundation
     
       Changes in the foundation
     
       Too much grease in the bearing
     
       Coolant temperature higher than 40 °C
     
       V-type rotary seal or gamma ring are
dragging
     
        Lubrication insufficient
     
        Bearing is corroded
     
        Bearing clearance too small
     
       Bearing clearance too large
     
       Chatter marks in the bearing track
     
       Standstill marks
     
       Cylindrical roller bearing operated at
low load
     
       Coupling pushes or pulls
     
       Belt tension too high
     

Remedial measure
Determine the cause, re-align parts
Check the ventilation passages
Take rotor off, re-balance it
Take rotor off, co-ordinate further measures with the
manufacturer
Align motor & driven machine, check the coupling
Re-balance coupled machine
Check the coupled machine
Check and repair the gear
Stiffen the foundation after consultation
Determine the cause, eliminate it and re-align the machine
Remove excess grease
Regrease bearing with suitable grease
Replace V-type rotary seal or gamma ring, maintain the
prescribed installation clearance
Lubricate according to instructions
Replace bearing
Use bearing with larger bearing clearance
Use bearing with smaller bearing clearance
Replace bearing
Replace bearing
Change the bearing according to manufacturer's instructions
Re-align motor & driven machine
Adjust the belt tension according to instructions
