This section describes the standard and optional features of the Minigas Mk5 instrument. The Minigas Mk5 is a small, portable gas monitor designed to be carried or worn without hindering the user. Its purpose is to monitor the atmosphere continuously for hazardous levels of four gases simultaneously.
Analytics sensors. Audible and visual alarms alert the user to the danger when hazardous or dangerous conditions are detected. Central to the operation of the Minigas Mk5 is a microprocessor which provides a multiple-display digital readout of real-time concentrations of the four gases and their associated peak readings.
SOFTWARE OPTIONS The following programmable facilities can be configured into the Minigas Mk5, either at the time of ordering the instrument or as a subsequent modification. However, it should be noted that certain options are incompatible with each other - for example, the AutoZero and Standby mode options are not available with G o / N o G o i n s t r u m e n t s .

After two seconds, the final start-up screen is displayed, which consists of all the display segments flashing followed by the alarm indicators flashing accompanied by a rapid bleeping audio tone. The Minigas Mk5 is now in Display Mode (see Section 2.7).
That is, the process of logging the measurement data and alarms should not interfere in any way with the conventional use of the Minigas Mk5 as a personal gas monitor. Consequently, any warnings associated with this facility appear only during the start-up sequence;...
I/O button. Log Full If the Minigas Mk5 is configured to have a fixed log and the log store is full, LOG Full appears in the upper two banks. This warning indicates that the instrument will not log any more data until the current data has been downloaded (see Section 3.6).

(see below). If the time displayed is satisfactory for the current use of the Minigas Mk5, wait 10 seconds for the normal Display Mode screen to appear. The stopwatch alarm countdown does not start until the Display Mode screen is displayed.
If the timer duration is incorrect and the Minigas Mk5 changes to Display Mode before it can be adjusted, switch the Minigas Mk5 off and then on again, and repeat the setting procedure. Note: The Countdown Stopwatch Alarm may be disabled by setting the timer duration to zero hours and zero minutes.
2. USING THE MINIGAS MK5 DISPLAY MODE 2.7.1 General It is possible to have various arrangements of the Minigas Mk5 screens, but these must be defined when ordering the instrument. Normally, five screens are provided in the Display Mode: Instantaneous exposure levels of all four gases.

2. USING THE MINIGAS MK5 2.10 WATCHDOG SIGNAL 2.10.1 General When the Minigas Mk5 is operating normally in a safe gas environment and no alarms and warnings have occurred previously then, as a confidence check, a watchdog signal recurs at 10-second intervals. This signal consists of a brief audio bleep accompanied by a short flash on the green indicator lights.

2. USING THE MINIGAS MK5 2.15 ALARMS 2.15.1 General The Minigas Mk5 has a number of alarm modes indicating a hazardous or dangerous environment, low battery condition or an instrument malfunction. When the concentration of any gas exceeds the instrument alarm level, the backlight and red alarm lights flash and the audio alarm sounds.

Table 2 Minigas Mk5 Warning Codes 2.16 INSTRUMENT WARNINGS AND FAULTS The Minigas Mk5 incorporates a continuous self-checking facility to monitor the correct functioning of the instrument. The most common fault that is likely to occur is an exhausted battery, for which a warning indication is given (see Section 2.18).
(see Section 4.6 for Service details). 2.17 OPERATIONAL ERROR INDICATION If the Minigas Mk5 detects an operational error (for example, a calibration failure in EasyCal mode, or an attempt to AutoZero a reading that is outside the preset limits), the error bleep sounds and the red lights flash.

If a Minigas Mk5 is switched on with a completely exhausted (or faulty) battery, the message FLt 800 will be displayed for as long as the I/O button is pressed.

Attach a lanyard or rope to the Minigas Mk5 and lower it into the confined space. Remove it after a 5 minute sample has been taken. If it is then giving an alarm indication, note the hazardous condition and refer to supervisory personnel.

NORMAL USE OF THE MINIGAS MK5 When working in a potentially hazardous environment, the Minigas Mk5 must be kept switched on and worn as close to the breathing area as possible. To this end, accessories are available to allow the instrument to be worn in a number of different ways (refer to Section 8 for a list of these accessories).
STORAGE OF THE MINIGAS MK5 CAUTION If a dry-cell Minigas Mk5 is to be placed in storage for long periods, the cells MUST be removed from the battery pack (see Section 4.4). As a general rule, the storage temperature for a Minigas Mk5 with its sensors fitted should be between 0°...

Normally, the Minigas Mk5 is switched off automatically at the end of the data transfer. If, for any reason, this does not happen, switch off the Minigas Mk5 by pressing and holding the I/O and O buttons until OFF is displayed on the instrument.
MAN0585.P65 Issue 01 - 11/99 2987M5023 4. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WARNING The substitution of components in the Minigas Mk5 may impair its' intrinsic safety. CAUTION The Minigas Mk5 must be serviced by qualified personnel only. GENERAL Routine Maintenance consists of Preventive Maintenance (Section 4.1.1) and Corrective Maintenance (Section 4.1.2).
Calibrate the Minigas Mk5 at six month intervals (or after repair) or, in the case of datalogging instruments, when the CAL dUE ‘date exceeded’ warning occurs during the startup sequence.
To fit the battery pack to the Minigas Mk5, ensure that the electrical contacts between the battery pack and the instrument are in line, then hold both spring-loaded studs depressed while pushing the battery pack into place.
Analytics warranty. Two types of battery charger (see Section 8) are available for recharging the Minigas Mk5 NiMH batteries – a fast charger (Section 4.3.2) and a trickle charger (Section 4.3.3). Figure 2 Minigas Mk5 fitted into a battery charger 4.3.2...
19 hours, although it is safe to leave it on charge for longer periods. 4.3.4 Charging the Minigas Mk5 Batteries The following procedure for battery charging applies to all types and variants of the battery charger. The battery charger has been designed as a bench mounting unit and it should be placed on a horizontal surface when in use.

Use a paper tissue or soft lint-free cloth to clean the contacts, do not use any form of abrasive cleaner. Insert the battery pack (or, after removing its protective sleeve, the complete Minigas Mk5 instrument) into the battery charger. The battery pack can only be located in the charger in one orientation (see Figure 2).
Mk5 are as follows: Rayovac 815; Duracell MN1500 or Ever Ready LR6/E91 Energiser. Ensure that the Minigas Mk5 is switched off and then remove the battery pack (Section 4.2). This is necessary in order to locate the hexagonal wrench (2.5mm A/F Allen key) stowed inside the end of the battery pack.
Mk5 is used in an area where welding work is being undertaken. Using the hexagonal wrench (2mm A/F Allen key) provided with the Minigas Mk5, remove the sensor grill (secured by three screws). Remove, and retain, the Neoprene seal. Lift out, and discard, the old filter.
Neoprene seal inside it and the clean filter (smooth side against the Neoprene seal) on top of the seal. Then place the Minigas Mk5 instrument onto the sensor grill (not vice versa) and turn the two items over together.

2987M5023 4. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE The Minigas Mk5 is manufactured to the specifications applicable at that time. Zellweger Analytics is under no obligation to update or modify products once sold. If an apparent instrument malfunction occurs: Read this Manual carefully, ensuring that the problem cannot be easily corrected and is not a user fault.
Field Settable Alarm mode allows the user to observe and, if necessary, change some of the factory-set alarm points directly on the Minigas Mk5 unit itself without the requirement, as previously, of having to connect a personal computer to the instrument.
5.2.2 Entering Field Settable Alarm Mode Ensure that the Minigas Mk5 is switched off, and remove the sleeve. Identify the calibration button anti-tamper screw at the top left of the instrument just to the rear of the sensor grill.
Enter Field Settable Alarm mode by holding the calibration button depressed while switching on the Minigas Mk5, ie while pressing and releasing the I/O button. The AdJ AL. screen is then displayed. Select No to return to the normal start-up sequence, or Yes to continue with the alarm setting adjustments.

INDICATION OF USER CONFIGURATION Once the alarm settings have been changed from the factory configuration settings, the Minigas Mk5 will display USr as the configuration code at start-up. This replaces the previous factory code (for example A02).
Tests of this nature are generally referred to as gas response checks. The Minigas Mk5 should be calibrated at intervals of six months or less, or after repair. The procedures described in this section assume that the instrument is a fully equipped Minigas Mk5.
Minigas Mk5. Test gases contained in cylinders fitted with a low flow gas regulator (500ml/min for chlorine, 300ml/min for all other gases). Zellweger Analytics can supply suitable calibration gases in disposable cylinders - refer to Section 8 for part numbers.

In this context, short is for a single bleep, medium is for two bleeps and long is for three bleeps. Some of the prompt screens appearing on the Minigas Mk5 display during calibration present the operator with a yes/no option (-y or n-).
CO On entering Calibration Mode the Put Air screen is displayed. This is a prompt to put the Minigas Mk5 in a clean air environment. Take care not to breathe over, or near, the sensor grill while zero calibration is being performed.
This is a prompt to apply a calibration gas or gas mixture for any of the fitted sensor channels. If it was necessary only to zero the Minigas Mk5 readings, select No to return to the normal instantaneous display.

Having confirmed that the expected gas concentrations agree with the known test gas concentrations, fit the calibration hood to the Minigas Mk5 and turn on the test gas cylinder. From this point on, span calibration of the toxic and explosive channels is fully automatic and requires no adjustments or timing on the part of the operator.

7.1.9 Electromagnetic Compatibility Within the requirements of EMC Directive 89/336/EEC, the Minigas Mk5 has been tested to ensure that it is resistant to RFI, ESD and mains-transient interference. Similarly, tests have been carried out to ensure that the Minigas Mk5 does not produce electrical interference.
This effect, known as cross-sensitivity, is shown in the table below which gives typical Minigas Mk5 readings obtained when a sensor is exposed to an ‘other gas’ concentration of 10ppm.
