In some cases it’s easier to use an interface box (SMEA‐1, SMA1‐LPEA, SM2, etc.) to power a SM1 microphone and connect to IP Camera or DVR. Figure 1a show different types of 3.5mm jacks and a RCA jack that are used to connect to IP Cameras. The Avigilon Connections shows the 3.5mm TRRS jack which means Tip, Ring1, Ring2 and Sleeve. If just using a microphone then Tip is used for Audio IN and Ring2 is used for ground. With 2 way Audio use same microphone connections and use Sleeve for Audio Out and Ring2 for ground. Note: grounds are shared between audio in and audio out through Ring2. Figure 2 is an example of different types of labels on terminal block connections on IP Cameras for microphone Line IN and MIC IN inputs. The “some examples” are some of the types of label we seen on IP Cameras with terminal blocks. A MIC Level Microphone has no preamp and is powered by the IP Camera. In most cases, MIC Level Microphones have a stereo 3.5mm male connector with the audio signal on TIP and RING which are tied together and SLEEVE is ground. Some IP Cameras have mono jacks for monaural MIC Inputs. Check IP cameras specification sheet or user’s manual to verify input is monaural input. - Page 4 Problem: No audio from microphone or speaker with ETS interface box and IP camera Possible cause: If your camera utilizes a 3.5mm MONO audio input or audio output the provided STEREO 3.3mm patch cords cause the audio signal to be shorted. To correct it, you must cut a wire inside the SMEA-1 or SMA1-LP-XX interface box.
