Destroyer H.M.S. Campbeltown
27. März 1942 – eine pechschwarze Nacht liegt über St.
Nazaire, Frankreich. Unter Volldampf fährt der speziell präpa-
rierte britische Zerstörer „Campbeltown" (ehemals USS
Buchanan Bauj. 1919) die Loire hinauf, die deutsche Flagge zei-
gend. Mit kleinen Explosionen setzt die Campbeltown vor
dem Trockendock des Kriegshafens von St. Nazaire auf Grund,
exakt dort wo die Tirpitz später einmal repariert werden soll-
te. Die Mannschaft wird gefangen genommen und deutsche
Offiziere gehen zur Untersuchung an Bord. 9 Stunden später
explodiert die total mit Sprengstoff gefüllte Campbeltown
und beschädigt das Dock schwer. Sie wurde damit zur welt-
größten Zeitbombe, dem trojanischen Pferd des 2. Weltkrieges.

The specially prepared British destroyer "Campbeltown" (for-
merly USS Buchanan, built 1919) goes up the Loire under full
steam flying the German flag. With small explosions the
Campbeltown runs aground in front of the dry dock of the
port of St. Nazaire, precisely where the Tirpitz will later be
repaired. The crew are taken prisoner and German officers go
aboard to investigate. 9 hours later the Campbeltown, which
is totally full of explosives, blows up and causes serious dam-
age to the dock. She was thus the largest ever time bomb, the
Trojan horse of the Second World War.
