PINION AND CA G E DISASSEMBLY
(REARWARD AXLE)
1. H old propeller shaft yoke with holding b a r (J-3453)
an d rem ove pinion nut.
2. Place assem bly in arb o r press with cage on bed of
arbor. Press drive pinion do w n w a rd an d out of cage.
3. R em ove yoke and retain er w ith oil seal assem bly. R e­
move pinion bearing spacer fro m pinion. C arefully tag
adjusting spacer for reassem bly reference.
4. Lift outer bearing cone from cage.
5. W hen inspection indicates necessity, cups can be re­
m oved from cage (fig. 18) with rem over (J-3940).
6. If necessary pinion bearing inner cone can be rem oved
w ith universal puller (J-3493) (fig. 19).
7. R em ov e snap ring holding stra ig h t roller bearing to
pinion, then rem ove bearing (fig. 19).
REASSEMBLY
Before axle is assem bled, m a k e sure th a t all parts have
been thorou ghly cleaned, particularly oil passages in pi­
nion cage, differential carrier an d bevel gear shaft bearing
cages. A pply a thin coating of differential lubricant to all
thrust and bearing surfaces to prevent scoring of parts
when vehicle is first placed in service.
U se of new lock w ashers and gaskets is reco m m en ded
th ro u g h o u t during assem bly of axle. A d ju stm en ts m ust be
carefully m a d e to insure efficient an d continuous o p e ra ­
tion. Refer to " Specifications" a t end of this section for
torque specifications of various bolts and nuts, also fits
and clearances of m ating parts.

If inspection indicates th a t drive pinion should be re­
placed, replacem ent of drive g e a r is also necessary as
these parts are serviced as m atched sets.
1. Press inner pinion bearing o n to drive pinion with wide
portion of cone to w ard pinion, until seated against
shoulder. U se plates from universal set (J-3493).
