SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Side Guide and Belt Positioning: In general, you should setup the base transport so the media is centered as it feeds through the printer. There is a scale, at the leading edge of the printer, with a zero reference.
Page 23
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM 2. Adjust the transport belts so that they are evenly distributed under the media. Depending on the width of the media, you may need to use 2, 3 or 4 belts. The rings [B], in the transport belt guides, are used to move the belt positions.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM 5. Loosen the two thumb screws [E], located at the outside of each of the side guides. Then adjust the height of the ball guide assemblies [F] for the thickness of your media. Lower the ball guide assemblies so the ball bearings just rest on the media (ball bearings will just start to be pushed up by the media).
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Installing the Ink Cartridges The XPS-ProMail 3.0 printer can accommodate six inkjet cartridges. The XPS-ProMail 4.0 printer can accommodate eight inkjet cartridges. Inkjet cartridges are installed as follows: Remove the inkjet cartridge from its packaging, taking care not to touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Ink Level Monitor Reset The printer can automatically calculate the approximate ink level available in each cartridge. It does this using a drop count method. When the calculated level is low (~5% ink remaining in the cartridge), the printer will stop and display “Head # Low.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Media Thickness Adjustment The XPS-ProMail System can handle most “inkjet suitable” media, up to 3/8-inch thick (0.375”). When running multi-page pieces/booklets; the outer jacket must be made of a stock which will support friction feeding, all folds must be crisp/even, and the thickness must be uniform. CAUTION DO NOT USE STAPLED PIECES IN THE XPS-PROMAIL SYSTEM.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Adjusting the Horizontal Print Position The horizontal print position is adjusted via your software program. This is normally done by changing the left margin or the location of the text box, in the layout. Adjusting the Vertical Print Position The vertical print position is adjusted by moving the print units.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Head Layouts (print area): XPS-ProMail 3.0 Printer There are three head clusters (print units), and a total of six ink cartridge positions, in the XPS- ProMail 3.0 printer. These print units can be positioned anywhere along the shafts (up and down).
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM XPS-ProDry 8.0 Setup Please review and understand all operation and safety precautions, before operating the dryer. DRYER HAZARDS: The dryer presents the following hazards. FIRE HAZARD: If media is left under the dryer lamps for more than a few seconds, it will ignite.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Allow the Lamps to Cool Before Powering OFF The dryer lamps should be allowed to cool for at least 5 minutes (fan on top running) before the main dryer lamp power switch [6] is turned off. If this procedure is not followed, lamp (bulb) life will be reduced.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Lamp Activation Control Conditions: There are many conditions that will prevent the dryer lamps from turning on. The dryer lamps will only be activated (turned on) if all of the following are in-place: Master Power to XPS-ProMail Base is ON (green button illuminated). 24V plug is properly attached from Dryer Base, to back of XPS-ProMail Base.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM TB-659 Conveyor Setup The conveyor provides additional drying time and an area to stack/accumulate the media for easy removal. Up to three TB-659 conveyors can be “daisy chained” to run in series. See “XPS-ProMail System Installation Guide” for TB-659 connection information.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Conveyor Position: The conveyor should be positioned at the exit end of the printer or dryer. It can be used at a “right-angle” to the system (as shown on the front cover of this document) or “in-line”.
SECTION 2 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Belt Position Adjustment: The four media transport belts can be repositioned to accommodate the media you are using. While the conveyor belts are moving at a medium speed, slide the Belt Guides [D], located under the left end of the conveyor table, to obtain the desired belt positions.

SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Section 3 – Operating the System Using Inkjet Suitable Media The XPS-ProMail System will print on many types of media, but some restrictions apply. As with any inkjet printing process, the texture and type of media has a direct effect on both the print quality and the ink drying time.
SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Printer Control Panel & MENU Features The printer's control panel keys can be used to access various functions that help control the printer. These functions and their operation are as follows: ENTER key The ENTER key is normally used to start/stop media feed. When the printer is placed in any of the Menu modes, the ENTER key is used to choose the options available in the Menu.
Page 39
SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Automatic Feed –Turning the feature ON will cause the printer to automatically start feeding and printing, without the need to press ENTER, if the printer is placed on-line before it starts receiving data. Enter when head (n) filled – The printer is capable of calculating when it thinks an ink cartridge is running low of ink.
SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Operation Sequence Example This example assumes that the entire system has been properly setup to accommodate your media, and that you will be running the system in the AUTO mode. Refer to Section 1 – Getting Acquainted for the location of the switches referred to below. The following example can be used to print a job in the Automatic (AUTO) Mode: 1.
SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Clearing (purging) the Ink Cartridge Nozzles If the XPS-ProMail 3.0/4.0 Printer has been sitting idle (not printing), it is a good idea to purge the printheads before beginning to run a job. This can be done from the Printer’s Control Panel; as follows: 1.
SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Print Recovery after a Jam If the media should jam in the printer, during the run, it is possible to recover up to 9 pieces (records) that might be lost. If a jam occurs, the printer control panel will display: “Jam: Reprint Lost Pieces”...
SECTION 3 OPERATING THE SYSTEM Paper Feed (Media Transport) Test The paper feed test is used to test for proper media transport before you begin printing. If the system is setup properly, it should feed the media without hesitation, skewing or jamming. 1.
OPERATING THE SYSTEM Printer Driver Properties Valid with Quadient Driver version 4.7.00 for the RENA XPS-ProMail 3.0 and RENA XPS-ProMail 4.0. The Printer Driver controls Printer operation and allows you to send fixed and variable text and graphics to Printer. Within your software application is a “Print” function. In that “Print” function is a Properties button.
