WARNING This booklet and the manual “Ear-sets for Widex BTE hearing aids” contain important information and instructions. Read these booklets carefully before you start using the hearing aid. NOTE Your hearing aid, ear-set and accessories may not look exactly as illus- trated in this booklet.
Page 10
Intended use The hearing aids are intended as air conduction amplification de- vices to be used in everyday listening environments. The hearing aids may be provided with the Zen program intended to provide a relaxing sound background (i.e. music/noise source) for adults who desire to listen to such a background in quiet.
Right/left identification If you wear hearing aids on both ears, the hearing aids can be provided with colored marks (red mark = right and blue mark = left). The arrow shows the position of the identification mark. 9 514 0273 041 #02_m-19.indd 11 6/5/2015 4:17:55 PM...
Acoustic indicators The hearing aid may be set to produce a signal to indicate the use of certain functions. The signal may be a spoken message (Smart- Speak) or tones (SmartTone). The signal can also be deactivated. Default set- Other Functions tings settings Adjusting volume...
Light emitting diode The hearing aid is provided with a light emitting diode. This may be set to flash when: • a signal is received from a remote control, if such is used. • the hearing aid is turned on or certain listening programs are activated.
The battery We recommend zinc-air batteries. Use a size 13 battery for the hearing aid. To obtain replacement batteries, please consult your hearing care professional. It is important to take note of the expiration date and the recommendations on the battery pack regarding dispos- al of used batteries.
Inserting the battery Before inserting a new battery into the hearing aid, remember to remove the adhesive tab. Once the tab has been removed, wait 60 seconds before placing the battery into the hearing aid. CAUTION Do not use batteries if there is a sticky residue from the tab or other un- wanted substance, as this can cause the hearing aid to malfunction.
Page 16
Use the nail grip to gently swing the battery drawer open. 9 514 0273 041 #02_m-19.indd 16 6/5/2015 4:17:55 PM...
Page 17
Place the battery in the drawer, so that the plus (+) sign on the battery faces upward. You can use the battery magnet provided to steer the battery into place. If the battery drawer does not close easily, the battery is incor- rectly inserted.
Page 18
The hearing aid may be provided with a battery drawer lock. This lock can be a good choice if the hearing aid is worn by a child. A special tool for opening the lock may be includ- ed when ordering the lock (see the drawing).
Low battery indication An acoustic indicator will sound when the battery is nearly ex- hausted, unless this function has been disabled (see page 12). We recommend that you always have a spare battery with you. WARNING Never leave an exhausted battery in the hearing aid. Exhausted batter- ies may leak, damaging the hearing aid.
Turning the hearing aid on and off The battery drawer of the hearing aid also functions as the on/ off switch. Push the switch upwards to turn on the hearing aid. An acoustic indicator will indi- cate that the hearing aid has been switched on unless this function has been disabled.
Page 21
The word “OFF” is clearly visible on the switch when the hearing aid is turned off. Please remember to turn off the hearing aid when it is not in use. Remove the battery if the hearing aid will not be used for sever- al days.
Positioning the hearing aid Insert the earmold in the ear canal while holding the lower part of the tube. It may help to pull the outer ear backwards and upwards with the opposite hand. Place the hearing aid behind the ear, so that the hearing aid and tube rest comfortably on the ear, close to your head.
Removing the hearing aid Remove the hearing aid from its position behind the ear. Carefully pull the earmold out of the ear canal, while holding the lower part of the tube. 9 514 0273 041 #02_m-19.indd 24 6/5/2015 4:17:56 PM...
Volume adjustment The hearing aid volume is adjusted automatically in accordance with your sound environment. Your hearing aid may furthermore be provided with a volume control, shaped like a small lever. Push the lever upward to gradually raise the volume. Push the lever downwards to gradually low- er the volume.
Page 26
Each time you operate the volume control, you will hear a beep- tone unless this function has been disabled. When the maximum or minimum adjustment level is reached, a steady tone will sound. WARNING If the volume in the hearing aid is generally too loud or too weak, or the reproduced sounds are distorted, or if you would like any further infor- mation, consult your hearing care professional.
Page 27
To turn off the sound completely • Keep pressing the volume control lever downwards until the steady tone has sounded To turn the sound on again • Press the lever upwards or • Change listening program Any adjustment of the volume setting will be canceled when your hearing aid is turned off, or when you change program.
Listening programs Your hearing aid may be provided with several of the following programs, plus the special Zen program called Zen+. Master Standard Music For listening to music For listening to the TV In this program you listen via the telecoil (T) and not via the hearing aid microphones (M).
Page 29
Acclimatiza- This program has the same features as the Master pro- tion gram but provides slightly less amplification Audibility Makes high-frequency sounds audible Extender Generates different kinds of tones or noise Zen+ Special Zen program with up to three different Zen styles If your needs change over time, the combination of listening pro- grams can be altered.
Page 30
Zen program Your hearing aid may be provided with a unique optional listen- ing program called Zen. It makes musical tones (and sometimes a rushing noise) in the background. These sounds are shaped ac- cording to your hearing loss. The Zen program may be used alone (without amplification) in quiet when you are not required to hear surrounding sounds.
Page 31
CAUTION Use of the different Zen programs may interfere with hearing sur- rounding sounds including speech. The programs should not be used when hearing such sounds is important. Switch the hearing aid to a non-Zen program in those situations. CAUTION If you perceive a decrease in loudness, tolerance of sounds, speech not as clear, or worsening tinnitus, contact your hearing care professional.
Page 32
Benefits The Zen program may provide a relaxing listening background for some people. When the Zen program is used in a tinnitus man- agement program, its wearer may experience some relief from tinnitus. Indications for use The Zen program is intended to provide a relaxing sound back- ground (i.e., music/noise source) for adults who desire to listen to such a background in quiet.
Page 33
Precautions To ensure the safety and effectiveness of the Zen program when used as a sound therapy tool for tinnitus, the tinnitus manage- ment program must be designed and conducted by hearing care professionals who are trained in tinnitus management. A tinnitus management program should include a complete audi- ological evaluation, tinnitus diagnosis, counseling, use of proper amplification and/or sound therapy tools.
Page 34
Use your hearing aid and the Zen program according to the di- rections and schedule recommended by your hearing care pro- fessionals. Warnings Use of the Zen program may interfere with hearing everyday sounds including speech. It should not be used when hearing such sounds is important.
Page 35
Risks There are no known risks or side effects associated with the use of the Zen program. However, consistent with our recommendations on the use of conventional hearing aids, stop using the hearing aids (and the Zen program) and seek attention from your hear- ing care professional if any of the following symptoms are noted: •...
Switching between the listening programs To change programs, press the program but- ton briefly. Each time you switch to another program, an acoustic indicator will sound un- less this function has been disabled. CAUTION • Your hearing aid has been tested for interference according to inter- national standards. Nevertheless, it is possible that unforeseen inter- ference may occur in the hearing aid due to electromagnetic radiation from other products such as alarm systems, room surveillance equip- ment and cell phones.
ADVICE NOTE • The hearing aid will not restore normal hearing and will not prevent or improve a hearing loss resulting from organic conditions. Howev- er, the hearing aid can help you to make the best possible use of your remaining hearing ability.
REGULATORY INFORMATION Contraindications: • Congenital or traumatic deformity of the ear • Active drainage from the ear within 90 days • History of rapid progressive hearing loss within previous 90 days • Acute or chronic dizziness • Sudden unilateral hearing loss in previous 90 days Important notice for prospective hearing aid users Good health practice requires that a person with a hearing loss have a medical evaluation by a licensed physician (preferably a physician...
Page 59
Following the medical evaluation, the physician will give you a written statement that states that your hearing loss has been medically evaluated and that you may be considered a candidate for a hearing aid. The physician will refer you to an audiologist or a hearing aid dispenser, as appropriate, for a hearing aid evaluation.
Page 60
Federal law restricts the sale of hearing aids to those individuals who have obtained a medical evaluation from a licensed physician. Federal law per- mits a fully informed adult to sign a waiver statement declining the medical evaluation for religious or personal beliefs that preclude consultation with a physician.
